Fine Woodworking (Taunton Press) did an article on "ebonizing" wood a while back. I think I spelled it right.....

You want dark? Think "black dye". Pretty basic and simple.

I have found that leather dyes give great results on wood.

Ammonia fuming also gives a "warm" darkening.

I have used black leather dye as needsmostuff and jeffquinn suggest, and it works very well. Simple, cheap and the results are great.
