Hello gents, new member here.
The other day I'm perusing Guns of the Old West magazine and see an ad in the back for a company calling itself Merwin and Hulbert, so I searched them out on the internet. From what I can tell from their website, they've not even produced so much as a prototype, yet are taking orders? The only picture they offer appears to be a computer graphic CAD/CAM image or something.
Has anyone talked with any of the people behind this company and gotten a sense of their ability to actually bring this to fruition? A few years ago, I got so frustrated with USFA perennially advertising their Omnipotent Sixshooter on their website yet never actually producing it, I'm especially leery of a company that can't even produce a prototype.
Any thoughts?

You might see a M&H on the market before you see a USFA 'Woodsman.'

I looked for M&H at SHOT - no soap.
I also share your frustration with the USFA Omnis. I have fired one of their "hideout" Omnis, and it was COOL. I wanted an Omni Flattop Target. BADLY.

Rob, I looked at their leather as well and was not impressed. Their handgun display case and Merwin stuff got delayed in shipping and wasn't there until (I think) the last day of SHOT. Even then, no complete guns - just some parts & pieces. According to the gent I spoke with, they've had problems with subcontractors on certain parts, and manufacturing challenges they weren't expecting that required some time-consuming design changes. Apparently it's not an easy gun to make even by today's standards. I wish them great success as I'm really intrigued by the design, but they'll have to make a lot more progress before I'm willing to break out the checkbook.

Boge, the USFA Flattop Target is exactly what I wanted too. I e-mailed USFA about every three months for a couple years if not more. Each time it was, "we should begin production in 90 days" or something similar. I finally got really insulted by the straight-faced "just around the corner" approach as insulting my intelligence. It not only made me stop inquiring about the elusive Omni, it's kept me from buying any USFA products. It was the whole idea of putting something on the website acting like it was available for years but never really making it that burned me.
As for M&H, man, if they can't produce a prototype, they got nerve taking orders left and right. Talk about buying a pig in a poke. Cable, I hope you don't get burned.

I find it very interesting that they were supposed to have shipped this past fall and have yet to even produce a prototype. What was weird was them posting on their forum that they thought coming through with production models would somehow be "better" than putting a prototype together. Maybe I'm wrong but there's just something fishy about the whole thing.

Cable, I just noticed in your post you said, "supposedly they are shipping some." I'd be highly suspicious if they're telling you this. Either they aren't shipping squat, or they're too dumb to snap a couple pics of one before they ship it to put on their website in place of their computer drawing. Either way, not good.
Does anybody know if the people involved have any background in the firearms manufacturing business?

Bren Ten, finally realized in the EAA Witness in 10mm, not a bit of fanfare upon it's release.

A guy I know lost about 5 grand he put down as a "deposit" on an Indian Chief, several years ago. The "company" never made the bike, then went bankrupt, someone walked away with his money and he got papers concerning the bankruptcy procedures for about 5 years,a lawyer finally told him he MIGHT get 25 cents on the dollar eventually. So yes there are scams out there and there are people that buy into them.
