I guess this is the place to post Range Reports? Couldn't find any others
I just love dirty guns!
My Ruger .44 Special Flat Top, made a pretty good showing for its first time out!
Ruger did a great job putting this one together. The fitting of the grip frame is the best I have seen to date. Barrel/cylinder gap is a tight .002. Cylinder throats all measure .432. The bore slugged out at .429 and the trigger pull is just under 3.5 pounds with a bit of creep. Now that I shot it, I’ll go ahead and work the trigger to my liking and give it a 11deg forcing cone, not much else needs attention, except maybe new grips one of these days. To tell the truth I like the black plastic grips.
I loaded two loads using some hard cast 240 gr. SWC one load was the classic Skeeter load of 7.5 gr. Unique the other was 13.2 gr IMR4227.
The 4227 turned in the best group of 1 7/8” at 25 yds with the limited groups that I shot, it is a very dirty powder and lots of unfired curnel’s of powder left behind. The Unique load turned in 2 3/8” I think the trigger job and forcing cone work will help shrink the groups a bit. I also skimped on the bullets and plan to order some 250 gr. Keith’s and a 250 gr. LFNGC to try out. All in all a good start, it sure is a fun gun to shoot, very tolerable blast, much less than a .357, which is nice for a packing gun.
Freedom Arms .475 Linebaugh, is such a nice revolver to shoot. I have been working up heavier loads each range trip, this was my third trip with the FA and shot progressively hotter loads today consisting of 22, 23 and 24 gr. of H4227 – 420 gr. WFNGC – Fed 155M. Groups started to open up at 24 gr. Looks like its time to switch to H110. This gun prefers LFNGC bullets and I need to order more! So I’m using up the WFNGC that I have. This revolver amazes me how well it shoots.
It was a beautiful day in the desert, relatively cool for this time of year, the heat is coming and with it less trips to my range. Summer time is good for reloading!
