well i'm done loading for this evening. Gonna take nine different loads to the range tomorrow to run accross the chrono. Some of the loads are to verify previous numbers, some are new. on the left is the 500L. 7 different loads. all using the same batch of brass, a ~465 gr GC LFN and CCI#350 primers. loads consists of various charges of h-110, 2400, and Unique. spectrum will be from ~900 fps up to ~1300 fps. I'm searching for a nice accurate ~1150 load. The cartridge in the middle is a 44spcl loaded with a ~250 gr keith over h-110 w/ a cci #350 primer On the right is another 44 spcl. this one loaded w/ a ~270gr WFN over h-110 w/ a cci #350 primer I'm expecting the two 44 spcl loads to be in the 1100+ fps range out of my FA.

Here are the results from this morning’s trip .500L (5 shot groups at 50 yrds) #1 – 31gr h-110, 1240 fps. This load has confused me in the past and this was my 4th time running it over a chrono. The first time I loaded it on virgin brass and ran it over a friends chrony and got 1300 fps. It did NOT feel like a 1300 fps load. Second time, on 1x brass, across my chrony, got 1235. Third time on 2x brass, across my chrony on a cooler day, got 1220 fps Today, 4th time, still on 2x brass across my chrono, got 1240 fps. I’m convinced this is a ~1235 fps load. The first 1300 must have been a fluke from a warmer day, threw the charges a bit heavy and maybe my friend’s chrono reads a bit fast. #2 – 30 gr H110, no historical data….today it ran 1200 fps #3 – 21 gr 2400, no history, 1064 fps, shot a real nice group. While i want a ~1150 fps load...... this load might convince me to stop chasing a velocity and settle here. #4- 22 gr 2400, no history, 1118 fps #5-23 gr 2400, history of 1139 fps, today 1154 fps. Nice group #6 – 24 gr 2400, history of 1177 fps, today 1178 fps. Show consistency, low std dev, low ext spread. But today's group was so so. I do want to spend more time with this load. #7 – Unique 10gr. no history, (4 shot group, forgot to turn on chrono) 817 fps
.44 spcl – I went ahead and brought my 4.25 FA and 4-5/8” Harton NM flattop. #1 -270 gr WFN w/ 18 gr h110…..no history -Harton – 1149fps - FA – 1110 fps #2-255 gr Keith w/ 19 gr h110 -Harton – 1181 fps -FA – 1140 fps
this appears to be consistent data. in both cases Alan's gun is ~40 fps faster than the FA. I didn't expect that much difference from ~1/4" difference in barrel length,, but i think it speaks well for how good/tight Alan builds a gun.

i think it speaks well for how good/tight Alan builds a gun. I have some Harton guns that you have to hold to the light JUST RIGHT to SEE the B/C gap. His statement has been that you don't need much gap if you have no endplay .

I don't own a .500L but am not surprised 2400 came through for you. The stuff has been around since Elmer was a young but it still works. I use it in .475, .454, .44mag, .44spl and .357.

Doghawg, I am really beginning to like 2400 more and more. I am relatively new to reloading and when i first started, I didn't spend much time with 2400. I spent a brief amount of time with it, then rushed to h-110 to chase speed. A friend of mine who knows much much more about reloading than I, feels that 2400 is better suited for the big, big bores rather than H-110. forget the velocity and recoil, but simply from an accuracy point of view his experience points to 2400 i've already tested 500L loads w/ 2400 that will take me from 1000 fps up to 1200 fps. While i like H-110, it really isn't all that flexible and you're pretty much going to be shooting warm loads when using it. Now i have a 44 mag load using h-110 for one revolver. since stumbling on the load, i don't know that i've shot anything else through it............probably a mistake on my part. I agree with you, it seems like you can find an accurate load with 2400 in just about any cartridge. here ya go razor.
