I've got a mountain lion hunt in three weeks and have still not decided on a handgun to take. I've pretty much got everything from 22 mag to 500L. I know I don't really need a whole lot but I thought I would ask and get some opinions.

They've been killed with everything from a .22LR on up. Personally, I prefer and have used my 6 1/2" 629 with 240 gr. JHP's for the ones I've taken: Utah Feb. '93: Idaho, Dec. '93: On a purely personal note, I wouldn't use a .357 or anything smaller, although I realize that others disagree. The .44 is perfect, to me. (P.S. Don't ask me why two pictures are smaller than the others... I'm techno challenged.)

I think Ken is right about the 44 maggie for lion, you want the cat dead before it hits the ground, not after. I took mine with a 357 at a distance of 5 feet, took the heart halfway out its chest, it still hit the ground & took 3-4 big jumps before realizing it was dead. Hound hunters tie up the dogs before the shooting starts so that a wounded cat doesn't kill one of them if it bails out of the tree wounded but alive, still you want to end it up in the tree! Ken, you looked lean as a lizard in those photo's!!
