I really like the Micarta. Wasn't this the one you were thinking of adding a second cylinder in 500 Wyoming?. -Lee www.singleactions.com

Lee, Yep I was going to to get a .500WE cylinder made for it, but I got thinking; Its a proprietary cartridge of Freedom Arms, add that to the fact that it has a belt makes the .500WE brass costly, more so I could see the .500WE going the way of the .450Express and .480Ruger only with the latter 2 one can always make brass from .308s and .475L brass with the .500WE I don't see a cartridge I could use. In the .450Express Ive used lacquer on hot loads to keep the bullets from jumping under recoil (a trick NAAs used to keep there hotter loads from pulling bullets) I might try this on the 50AE.
Stan, I have a couple of FAs in need of Ken's front site, Ive been talking to him about getting some made up, I just need to send him some money.

IMHO you will be impressed with the perceived performance of the 500AE in the FA. In other words it kicks like a MULE! I could not believe the recoil of the factory ammo. I load a 330 grain cast bullet that I can shoot all day... Comes out of a Magma mold intended for the AE but has a crimp groove.
FWIW if the 500WE went away and I was worried about brass I'd be tempted to get Jack Huntington to convert mine to a 500JRH.
I like to keep a selection of Ken's FA sights on hand.. Early on I was amazed at how he knew which height blade I needed no matter the cartridge or barrel length! When I figured out he owned virtually every FA in the southeast that wasn't mine I understood...

What does 500W brass cost?

FAs sells 5 boxes of unprimed brass (320 cases) for $247 or 500 cases bulk for $343 It would be fun to shoot the 500WE side by side to my 500JRH. from what I hear, the 500WE has the larger case volume with a shorter over all length.

I think there's about a 1% volume difference, if I remember correctly (who's counting?) in favor of the WE over the JRH. In fact though, the AE, WE, and JRH are essentially capacity equals. There's more to be gained or lost in seating depths with various bullets. I was somewhat surprised when I checked water capacity myself some time ago and learned that the AE and WE are essentially identical (the WE case is longer, but the AE case is larger at the bottom) . The three can be loaded to be performance triplets, but the AE does pose the very real bullet back-out problems with very heavy loads. I'm a big fan of the FA .500WE, loaded mild to wild, and the AE loaded "mild" (if a 325 @ 1100 - 1150 is "mild").

FWIW when you load for your 50AE be careful not to roll any lead up at the case mouth. The AE headspaces there and the FA doesn't put up with a lot of headspace nonsense.
Since the 500JRH is supposed to be a standard cartridge in the BFR at Magnum Research this year I hope to add a 500JRH to my 50 bore set in the near future.

Reeder did an excellent job on fitting those grips. I really like the white too.

You been to Gary's web site to check the price? Turn around time isn't bad either...

AXE, I thought that brass was just tighter spec. cut off .300 Win. Mag.? I remember Bob telling me he tried normal belted stuff and they had so much variation in it (certainly to his specs.) that he decided to have his own rolled.
But is it that different? I'd think you could always buy a certain lot of belted brass and fine tune it to make it work fine.
The main merit to that .500 WE is that it does not take out all the cylinder pawl gear with the rim room. The re-bated "chambers" sure do look funny and the cylinder pawl gear is truly shaped like a star. I kind of like it.

Waterboy, If the rim on the 500JRH is the same dia. as the belt on the 500WE why would there be any difference in the cylinder pawl gear? Both cylinders would need a .545" hole in them for the brass to drop in, right?
