For years I have been told the Bisley grip frame and hammer rule. Now the proud owner of a Ruger .45 Bisley have found the hammer to be at a disadvantage to the standard hammer. Less leverage and less sure grip wise and slower. Am I alone on this?

Never found the Bisley hammer to be particularly advantageous or hindrance. Just seems to go better with the Bisley grip. The grip does rule when it comes to heavy kickers.

I KNOW I am going to be taken to task over this.BUT...I had a 45 Colt in a Blackhawk and a Bisley at the same time...well I still have the Blackhawk... I have about as big a set of hands as a human can be cursed with and personally I hate the Bisley grip.

The SBH hunter hammer is almost the same hight as the Bisley hammer and bolts right in with no mod . I shoot gunfighter class and the low hammer really help me . I shoot 1 hand unsubported and narrow the hammer so I can slip hammer easier . www.youtube.com/watch?v=2gksCGle0FM&feature=related

It is all in the individual... One size does not fit all! You never really know until you try them for yourself!

The problem the Ruger Bisley hammer gives me is that when gripping the gun with the hammer cocked, the hammer contacts the web of my hand. I usually have to adjust my grip so my hand doesn't interfere with the hammer's release. '

we havent had this conversation in a couple of weeks. As AH pointed it is personal preference.
I like Bisley hammers, followed by SBH, and dead last std. BH hammers. If it is over 357 mag I want a Bisley grip frame. Maybe I am old or maybe I have lost my toughness but I dont enjoy shooting even moderate recoiling guns with a std. BH gripframe. I have a 510 GNR I welcome anyone to put a std gripframe on and shoot.

Thanks for the side by side of all the hammers,I never realised the differences. And the question was over hammers and not grip frames..my bad.

AKray, you just need to remove a little bit of that flesh from the web of your hand is all... You have too man y cool guns as it is ... at least we know that Biseleys will be easy pickins in Alaska:-)

Because the SBH hammer was just legalized for SASS, the supply of same is dry as a bone! Everybody is out. Ruger might crank up production or might not . Ron Powers is apparently considering making some...they'll be much more expensive but they have their advantages . I personally like the standard SBH hammer (normal wider profile) on my NewVaq357. I'm a strong-side thumber and at the end of the cocking stroke my strongside thumb drops onto my off-hand thumb, right where I want it...at the moment I pull the trigger I'm doing a "thumb over thumb" thing a lot like what the 1911 guys do. Obviously that's all connected to your own hand size and hold.

I like the Bisley grip-frame best if the right custom grip is used, I like the SB Hammer best but it does leave an opening in the gripframe if used in a Bisley frame. I think its one of those things, were you need to play a little, try different grips, different grip-frames and mix and match hammers until you find what fits you best. You might find there is more then one best ans, I have a Jack Huntington built gun with thick flat bottom bisley grips, fits great in my big hands, Reeders gunfighter grips are thin and rounded bottoms and they somehow fit my big hands very well also, so you just got to try as many as you can and see what works for you.

I hate the bisley frame , I can't control gun . I shoot 1 hand unsupported and I like the little finger under bottom of grip frame [and most top shooters ]to control the roll of gun for a faster 2nd shot . That why I put the Vaquero frame on my MAXIE with the SBH hunter hammer . This setup is perfect for me and my small hands . This is not for anyone with large hands .
