A caliber missing from my planned lineup over the next year or so is the .500 Linebaugh. How does the #5 handle recoil on something like this? I'm perusing a .44 mag anniversary flattop base gun with an ovate ribbed barrel and a #5 grip frame.
I have been given to understand that due to lower operating pressures, the .500 isn't as brutal as the .475. My fingers are slim enough that I can do a three fingers on the front strap grip on XR3 / XR3-RED's, if they have flat bottom grips.
I really want to add a #5 grip frame to my stable, but I don't want to mess with my Lipsey's cause I'm so pleased with it as it is.
And restricting this .500 to "light" loads would be ok. There is a Bisley-ized .500 max that should be coming home soon if I want to be ridiculous.

You know what, just writing it down sold me on it. To hell if it works ok, it would LOOK amazing.

My first 500L is in the pipeline..... Don't expect it to kick as much as my 4 inch 500WE FA... Don't know about the #5 grip frame in one of these monsters.... The typical recommended Bisley grip frame is a little more straight up isn't it?

it might work out OK grip frames & recoil are highly subjective individual choices, needs and opinions on actual & percieved recoil. On high recoil single actions the the Freedom Arms are the best for me followed very closely by the Ruger Bisley. the Super Blachawk eats my knuckles up even with .44Specials, the XR3red just doesn't feel right and the original Colt & XR3 work only up to 250grainers @1100fps. the BFR version of the RSBH works out OK. then when swapping to double actions the Redhawk is OK, the S&W with either the old target stocks or a wood Hogue monogrip handles ok. and use alot of Ahrends compacts on short S&W

I agree, it's mostly subjective

A caliber missing from my planned lineup over the next year or so is the .500 Linebaugh. How does the #5 handle recoil on something like this? TRY A FULL HOUSE 300 GR. .44 MAGNUM IN A TLA .44 #5 AND YOU WILL EASILY BE ABLE TO ANSWER YOUR OWN QUESTION.

I can answer this one. Its gonna smart to shoot any 500 with a #5 gripframe. Better stick to a Bisley gripframe in the 500 calibers. If you are anywhere near S. Texas you can try mine....

Ditto what JT wrote. Early on I was shooting 325 gr CPBC's at 1300 fps in my TLA #5 and it was not good. Just not enough to hold on to for me. I need that pinky on the grip not under it.

Remember that the #5 style grip frame will not move your middle finger away from the trigger guard like the Bisley grip frame does. As Boxhead says, the #5 grip frame will also not let you get all your fingers on the grip unless you have really small hands.

The remarking on the serial no side of the frame says Linebaugh to me, but I'm more than happy to be proven wrong.
BTW, as I said in the first post, I have slim fingers, and can take a three fingered grip on an XR3.

Mine is an early one built by John Linebaugh. Very accurate and tight!
Aggie01, I can get all my fingers on the front strap of a XR3 as well. That however is not the problem....what you will find is that the back of the trigger guard will whack you on the knuckle.
I was remembering that a guy did put a #5 frame on a large caliber gun. Go over to the Reeder chat board and look up a guy called waterboy. Who knows, you might actually be able to do it. Besides, if it doesnt work you can always change out the frame.....

I've only shot 44 Magnum on a #5 gripframe. For my hand, the #5 controls recoil better than an XR3-RED or Super Blackhawk, but still takes a back seat to the Bisley. Again though, that's my hand. -Lee www.singleactions.com
