I was going thru the safe yesterday after some shooting and noticed that the "case hardened" finish on 2 of my Vaqueros is statring to fade/discolor...looks almost like rust but I keep them oiled and it doesnt rub off like rust would. has anyone else had this happen? Is this just what happens with their chemical process? BTW both of them are 7-8 years old.

I use Renaissance Wax on my "Old" Model Vaqueros with the faux CCH. Seems to protect them from fading and corrosion. It is used on museum pieces and comes highly recommended. Best place to buy it is on E-Bay.

Mine was worn when I got it & tends to get a little oxidation on the frame. I have, on occasion, hit it lightlty with 0000 steel wool and dobbed on a little cold blue. I bought it to use anyhow so I mostly just go with the flow.

I have 3 Birds Head Vaqueros with 3.75 inch barrels and 2 New Vaqueros with 4 5/8 inch barrels. The faux (fake) CCH is not worth saving. I have spent too much time worrying about whether I should have sent to Turnbull for real CCH, have them blued or just hit them with a Scotch brite pad and antique them. I have an old Winchester made in 1917 with a Redfield peep sight and the gun has a total of less than 10% of the bluing left. It has a patina that only time and use could put on the gun. The stock has minor nicks and scratches that you would get with 3 generations of use. It is the most beautiful (to me) gun in 2 safes full of guns. If I could impart that look (or have it done) to the Vaqueros I would be happy. Then I would have to see if Rob L could make an "old" holster. I've seen some of the more talented folks here antique their Vaqueros and they looked pretty good. Does someone have a link to an antique project?

I know Ruger has abandoned the fake-color-case finish completely on current production. Didn't I hear somewhere that they'd convert a fake-case gun to all-blue for free if you ask and pay shipping?

I have seen some of the Vaqueros that had the simulated CCH that faded & now look kind of like a Colt that is 60 years old & the CCH is fading. I think it looks kind of nice, an aged new gun. Frank

I need to stop buying guns and buy a camera.
