A bit OT but this past week my dear wife and I searched for a home in the Texas Hill Country, a move back to the States after 4 1 /2 years in Alberta. This will be our fifth move in 12 years since we left California where were both were born, raised and educated. Me from the north, she from the south though we landed in the central coast for college where we met and married. We first moved from northern California to West Texas and just clicked with the Texas attitude and friendliness there. My wife still carries a "drawl" since then as many claim. We returned some years later to just outside north Houston and again enjoyed Texan's. My three boys were born in California (2) and Texas (1) barely, before we moved to Kansas. Each move landed us in a nice home that we knew we would leave in 2 - 3 years so they really became a commodity, a house but not a home. At times, soon after we moved my office moved as well and I was in another state or country while my family dealt with our move and my subsequent move... This search was to land us on our final home along with our place in the woods of northern Idaho so it was a different experience. She pushed a couple of "rules" for the last house, some for her, some for me. For me her rules were a big garage/shop for the gun toys and maybe a return to my hot rod days and a great kitchen as I love to cook and something she would not mind handing on full time. Also, I needed a bit of space from the neighbors. A kind reminder as to why I married her. Here's a few shots of what we found that met her needs for me and the rest that she desired. We have 6 acres that offer enough separation. We have Idaho when we need more. To say we are pleased is an understatement and in 5 or 6 years retirement will land and we should be set. In the mean time, I will be off to Dubai to work a project in Iraq, the longest commute ever for me. Though not yet done I thought I would share this turning point for us after a lot of hard work looking and planning forward.

Okay Box, I'm showing my ignorance here but what part of Texas is called the hill country? The area of your new home looks great compared to where my son is stationed in Del Rio. The reason I am asking is I am moving my daughter down to a new job in Del Rio next month and I'm trying to decide on which route to take. The area you posted looks like something I'd like to explore a little on the way down if it is in the p[art og Texas west of the D/FW to Houston line.

I don't know that you can do better than the Texas Hill Country. congrats!
It is my plan right now to find ~ 100 acres that I can hunt on till retirment. Then retire there when the time comes. I absolutely love the Hill Country.

edit............ Kings6, Del Rio is west of the Hill Country. Some people consider Rocksprings to be part of the Hill Country, but in my opinion that area doesn't have as many oaks and fertile land.
google Mason, Bandera, Leakey, Llanno ........Texas and that will give you a fair idea of where the Texas Hill Country is located or at least that's what I call the Hill Country area. Kind of due west of San Antonio as well.

Hay Box, congrats on the new house. Is that a Viking commercial stove in the new kitchen. If so, that's one heck of a stove. Have fun. Bill

If you never been to the Texas Hill Country, Kerrville is a must to visit. 65 miles West of San Antonio right off I-10. A town of about 20,000 and in winter swells a tad with all the snow birds from up North parking their RV rigs here until Spring when they head back North. Is a great place to live and raise a family. Laid back area, great people & a very pretty place. Great winters & Spring. Can get toasty in the summer but no worse than the other areas mentioned above. Fredricksburg is about 23 miles north and is another nice town. Settled by Germans & a most interesting place. The locals in K. VIlle treat you so many ways that one of them hs to be right.

Congrats, Box. Nice place. I read your post as you were leaving Alberta and read into the lines that there was somewhat of a sense of heading into the unknown mixed with great adventure and anticipation. Certainly glad to hear it's worked out well.
The sixgun and sixgunner density should be considerably higher in your new 'hood, which I'd have to think is a good thing. I hope the work assignments allow you the time to enjoy it.
