I have a son in the Army, stationed in Afghanistan, has been in the hottest fighting area for a while. He is supposed to be coming back to be staioned stateside in the spring. To reward him for his service, the wife and I want to take him on an elk hunt next fall. It is something he has always wanted to do, but has not had the opportunity.
The plan is to find a place where the whole family can go along, 3 of us to hunt, the rest to stay at the camp.
Not sure where to try to go, is everywhere a tag draw situation?
If any of you have any ideas I would appreciate the help.
Joe

Some area's are easier to draw tags than others. Their are still good areas that can be had without preference points. I think, someone would have to confirm this, that hunting on private land could get around the difficulties of getting a permit. BUt I imagine the $$ would be much much more. Colorado DOW website has good info regarding what areas need points (previous years of not getting permits) and which do not. Find potential unit's and look at the preference points required. Good place to start. wildlife.state.co.us/Hunting/BigGame/Statistics/Good luck and tell your son thanks.

I ask cost as it directly relates to expected success, expected size of elk, etc. If you want decent odds you will generally pay more, if you want a decent bull you will generally pay more, if you want a nice lodge you will generally pay more... You really need to draw a line in the sand with regard to what you are willing to spend and what you are really expecting of such a hunt. Then some of us here can likely help you.
