new toy i picked up from Alan today. This is the second revolver Alan has done for me. I don't know that I've ever been more pleased with a purchase.
I supplied Alan with a chunk of "antique ivory" linen micarta and he turned it into what are the most comfortable bisley grips i've handled . Also included in the pic are a CCH hammer and trigger, recessed cylinder, crescent ejector rod handle and one subtle detail
barrel band and crown
Each of Alan's sights/bases are individually made for each gun. While many look similar, each sight/base is made one at a time specificaly for each project. The proportion and balance of this sight combo have exceeded my expectations.
Alan requested I provided him some loaded rounds so he could use them during the building of the gun. When i returned home, I headed to the range and shot up the remainder of those loads(i think it was 35+/- rounds). Either way, this gun has exactly 60 rounds through it now.
I only shot a few of each load over the chrony to get a ball park idea of the loads. Each load used Montanna Bullet's 440 gr LBT g/c bullet. as it comes from them, it weights 468 gr on my scale.
the light load used Unique to push the bullet to ~870 fps ..only a 2 shot sample
medium load was 2400 pushing the bullet to ~1230 fps.. only a 2 shot sample. this load was actually faster than i expected. i had expected this to be a ~1175 fps load.
the warm load was h-110 giving me 1283 avg for 5 shots. the individual shots were 1296, 1293, 1280, 1279, 1268......in that order. I believe the reason for the declining velocity was due to the remaining bullets pulling crimps slightly after each firing. Later i did examine a 5th bullet after firing 4 and noticed a slight bit of movement from the crimp.
One of the first things I noticed today was while shooting the warm load. The recoil and roll of the revolver did not seem as "pronounced" as I recall from the last time I shot a 500L using a similar bullet at similar velocities in ~1300 fps zone. Whether today's experience was due to me being more familiar with the recoil from warmer loads, the way Alan's grip fit my hand or a combination of the two............either way, i was pleasantly surprised.
I'd like to thank Alan for his work and all the folks whose ears I twisted about this build. thank each of you for your input.
