Is it manageable to convert a pre-73 three screw blackhawk to leverage Ruger's transfer bar assembly?
Is this as simple as acquiring all the internal workings of a new model and installing them - or is there more to it than that?
p.s. - I don't want to send this one to ruger as it has been extensively customized (new cyclinder, new grip frame).

natec,
Yes you can do it yourself. The conversion action consists of: hammer, trigger, tx bar, cylinder latch, base pin and a stronger trigger return spring. There are three sizes of actions, large frame, medium frame and small frame. So if you got one for your size frame the action would most likely drop in. Might need some fitting somewhere though. What you would probably have to fit would be the pawl. On the mid frame I have the conversion action had a really short pawl and the timing was way off. I had to fit a new one when I put the correct half cock action back in.

If you post a WTB ad on theRuger Forum you will probably get offers to sell you one for close to shipping costs. The last one I got rid of I let go for the cost of shipping.

Ruger supplies the part set they install for free so don't pay much for one. FWIW the conversion parts for the 3 screw is significantly different from the inards of a NM... Works the same but Ruger had to make it fit in an OM cylinder frame..

J Miller - Thanks for the quick response. This one is a 44 (non-flattop), which I believe makes its the largest of the three sizes you mention.
Kings6 - I will give that a try. I haven't been over on that forum in quite a long time.
Axehandle - I assumed Ruger wouldn't sell/provide those parts, that they would just tell me to ship the gun to them for fitting. Have they shipped items directly to you?

Not me! You'll not find me putting any of that stuff in any of my OM Rugers! You might check with Hamilton Bowen. He delivers some guns now days that have been converted..

What you can't do is use New Model parts to upgrade an Old Model. The Old Model transfer bar parts are very different from what's in a New Model action.
In other words, even when both have transfer bars, an Old Model gun is different inside than a New Model gun.

You'll lose that wonderful wide spur hammer off of your fine ol' Super Blackhawk! The "conversion kits" do NOT include a wide spur hammer. Carl
