Shot my brand new 4-5/8" 44 special Lipseys Ruger yesterday.
About every 3rd or 4th round, the hammer will not fully cock. When this happens I lower it fully, then re-try cocking it. Eventually after 2 or 3 tries it would work - so I finished up the 20 rounds I brought with me.
The gun was also hitting over a foot left at 10 paces. After I adjusted the rear sight to its limit I was able to get it within 8".
When I cleaned and inspected the gun, I found that the front sight is not vertical. It appears to be rotated to the right almost 3 degrees. -- I was so excited when I bought this one that I failed to notice.
I'm sending the gun back to Ruger tomorrow.

I have heard a lot of complaints about the new Ruger's it seem the company is not ran to the same standard as when Bill Ruger was alive.

Send it back to Ruger. Call them up and they should handle shipping. Does not sound like anything I would want to pass on to anybody else. They will make it right just to bad it has to happen at all.

It makes you wonder if they test-fire these guns at the factory anymore!

natec; That IS disappointing. My .44 Lipsey Special is finished near perfectly, the cylinder throats are round and .430"-.431" and I LOVE the alignment pawl. That is a REAL improvement. I DID have a trigger job done (every Ruger I have ever owned NEEDED a trigger job).
I have been EXTREMELY happy with my Ruger .44 Lipsey Special Flattop 5½". Hopefully, Ruger will correct the problems "Post Haste"!
Good luck! Dale53

Regarding the hammer locking:
The guy on the phone said that sometimes if the base pin isn't fully seated that the transfer bar will hit the firing pin on its way up which prevents it from cocking. I'll check that when I get home. I can also fairly easily put a slight bevel on the leading edge of the transfer bar without impeding its usefulness.
Regarding the windage he seemed particularly interested in the type of ammo I was shooting and stated that they won't do anything if it hit 18" left with handloads (which is ridiculous). I said the Win Silvertip factory ammo did the same thing. He said if I mail it in they would check it out.
They won't send me a pre-paid shipping label - and at $75 to mail it in from Alaska - I think instead I'll take it to the LGS for the front sight alignment, then try and fix the transfer bar myself.

A BAD ONE CAN GET THROUGH ANY COMPANY FROM TIME TO TIME. BUT RUGER RIFLE BARRELS ARE THE BEST THEY HAVE EVER OFFERED, THE FINISH ON THE LIPSEY'S .44 SPECIALS IS AS NICE AS EARLY SUPERS, AND THERE ARE MANY THINGS NOW OFFERED THE OLD MAN WOULD NOT HAVE ALLOWED.

Nate HAVE YOUR LOCAL GUNSMITH TIGHTEN THE BARREL A FEW DEGREES. SHOULD BE A$15 OR LESS FIX. THE JAMMING IS PROBABLY THE BASE PIN LOOSENING. ALSO AN EASY FIX.

Len: Not to challenge you but how many new Rugers have you purchased and or shot since Bill Ruger died? I have dozens of new and old Rugers: My two FTs 44 specials shoot and handle as nicely as my Clements OM SBH. I have shoot and handeled dozens of other new Rugers SA s, Das and Semis and new carbines; all great stuff well done. The new Bisley FT s are shooting like FAs and custom Rugers... If anything Ruger is at it's best. Yep stuff will get through occasionally, it happens. 20 & 30 round magazines, new options designs, stuff we have clamored for years for and more coming out every month. Thanks to wholesalers like Lipsy's and the Talo group, we have semi custom Rugers that we could only dream of a few years ago. Sorry, my Ruger glass is decidedly more than half full!

John -
Thanks for the advice. I'm fortunate to have some good gunsmiths locally up here.
Glad to see you up and about on the forum. Best wishes.

Well its obvious John Taffin is getting his strength back and I am happy for him.
I am not sure of the exact number but my comment is based a dozen or so complaints about quality issues documented on this and other forums, similar comments from a couple of local gun shops and discussions with good friend of mine who was a very good friend of Bill Ruger’s. It seems the most common issue is that of running out of rear sight adjustment. This friend of mine who is in the firearms industry just a couple of weeks back mentioned his personal experiences and issues others have brought to him and that he felt the quality control was not up to Bills standards. He knew Bill Ruger as someone who strived for perfection. Maybe in Ruger’s days they had just as many problems and in today’s world of the internet and gun forums they are better documented. I have no way of knowing but I have been left with the impression there are too many things slipping past Ruger’s quality control. That said I would and do buy their products and just finished a modified Ruger 77 action, 17 HMR.
The only other comment I would make is no one is perfect I own two businesses and as hard as we try mistakes are made. We do our best to correct them totally at our expense. To me an important test of people or businesses I deal with is how they perform when there is a problem. I believe Ruger should pay shipping costs or local gunsmith cost and the customer should not be out a penny, but that’s just me.

It seems the most common issue is that of running out of rear sight adjustment. THIS HAS BEEN A PERENNIAL PROBLEM SINCE 1955. FOR SOME REASON RUGER HAS ALWAYS BEEN STINGY WITH THE HEIGHT OF THEIR FRONT SIGHT BLADES. IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH WHETHER THE OLD MAN IS IN CHARGE OR NOT.
