You fellows may remember me ordering a FA97 in .224-32FA. I wanted something different and fun, but I also wanted to hunt with it some. Of course there are numerous small game applications but I also wanted something different there too. I know lots of guys with really big deer, what about “small” deer? This is a Muntjac or Asian Fanged Barking Deer. I’m not making that up. I think they told me they are the smallest and oldest species of deer. They indeed have fangs they use to fight and have been known to kill dogs!
I truly think you have to literally step on them to get them out of their bed as I tromped over hill and dale for two days even after being tipped off as to the area where he frequented. My sage old guide finally flushed him out and I had a very untypical short range 25 yd. Shot. All I had to do was stay still and stop those sights from shaking. I have a V-notch rear and green fiber bead front. I cuss them for deliberate shooting off the bench but they flat rule for actual field shooting at game. The gun will shoot ¼” groups at that range but I’m only good for minute of Muntjac on a good day.
From the 7.5” barrel using a ½ grain under starting charge of 4227 (I cannot get to the max. FA suggests w/o sticking so far) and the 40 gr. Hornady V-max bullet. I am finding some of the varmint bullets fried at handgun speeds (2000-2100 fps) actually hold together and don’t overexpand like you’d think. Two shoulder shots put him down and didn’t exit. To be honest a .22 WMR would have done about the same but would have not been as fun, being a rimfire it is not permitted either. Anyway my Single-six is not nearly as accurate as the FA.
I also got to try out the new "Alfred Goerg" Alaskan shoulder holster rig being produced by Reeder Custom Guns. They have an Amish contractor make them on order. Very high quality under shoulder design with a x-back retention held on the off side via flat shellholder pad. It's evenly distributed wt. helped as did the position to keep from banging my binoculars on the FA grip. The gun is adequately held by a spring clip around the cylinder but a safety strap is there too. Neat new/vintage bit of kit.
Never eaten Muntjac but I have some now. Wilson’s Taxidermy in Monterey, TN is doing a full wall mount on a rock for me. Grady does fantastic work and is top drawer. Ships reasonable too. Keep them in mind.
