Here is a project I just finished up. Started as a GB purchase of saddle ring military carbine that had a Numrich 45-70 kit already installed. I side levered it, octagon topped the receiver, french greyed the receiver, slow rust blued the barrel, nitre blued the small stuff, and upgraded the sights. Since I am not a gunsmith here are some things I learned from this project. I now know why they call it SLOW rust blueing. Slow rust blueing is pretty simple but proper prep and handling techniques are a must. I ended up with a couple spots where the blue didnt take. Nitre blue is also pretty simple. Again prep and handling. Pardon the oil smudges. Before After

Gary,
Very nice work on the rifle I just finish redoing the stock, fore-end and re-bluing the barrel and receiver on a old Stevens Model 94 F 12 Gauge that my mother gave me when I was 12 years old. True labor of love.

VERY nice job! Is that wood original to the military carbine? It seems to suit the rifle perfectly.

The butt stock is original military. From what I have found on the internet the Numrich "kits" were offered in the 60's and 70's. They came with a barrel and forearm. My partner has one that is half round. Not sure if it was sold that way or someone turned it down.

Bill it is 28" and is marked "Numrich Arms 45-70 Buffalo". Not sure who made them for Numrich but I understand that 30-40 years ago there was an abundance of Rollers available for next to nothing. Numrich offered these kits with a barrel and forearm since 43 spanish was not readily available. I understand Badger is busy filling military contracts. I have 2 other Roller projects I am working on. Using Green mountain on both. A 50-70 Custer rifle and a 32-40.

brettov, thank you. I am proud of it. Trevor, the side lever came from Dave at Lone Star rifle. It was a rough casting that I finished, and hand checkered the tab. Dave was very helpful on how to make a new axle pin and how to key it to the breechblock. If your interested here is a link to a photo gallery showing it start to finish. It also shows the side lever in cast form prior to any work. www.randgfirearms.com/photogallery/main.php?g2_itemId=9501

Will the 32-40 be on the same size frame as the other two? That is a great old cartridge!

Yes the 32-40 is the same size frame. Steve Baldwin has already threaded and chambered the GM tapered octagon. May side lever it also. The 50-70 is barreled and chambered. I have mounted the MVA rough and ready rear and used the same Pedersoli Beech that is on the 45-70. The rough and ready is a replica of the original RRB sporting rifle combo sight. This 45-70 and my partners half round are the trial runs before I try to do my partners Gove underlever and my 32-40 and 50-70. He has a small fortune invested in the Gove and would probably do unspeakable harm if I hurt it.

Hello Gary Thank you for the information and the link, I have started on my 12 bore rifle project using a Norwegian rolling block action and I was thinking a side lever would dress it up a bit.

Nice work, especially enjoy that French gray contrasting with the blue. Let us know how it shoots.
