All this talk of 264 Win Mags inspired me to build another one. Just ordered a 1:8" stainless Shilen tube with their "ratchet" rifling. I know they're supposed to be easier to clean and may yield longer life. Has anyone here used one and if so how has it worked out? Pretty much all of our customs are built with Shilen tube, but this is my first ratchet cut. -Lee www.singleactions.com

Lee, I have one chambered in .308. Allthough I'm burning about 20 grains less powder than you'll be, it does clean quickly. At least a patch or 2 quicker than a 6.5 bore standard cut Krieger I have. Can't tell you about the life as it's only got 874 rounds through it so far. But the way it shoots & cleans I would buy another.

Not to sound dumb but what is ratchet rifling? The Shilen website makes it look like it is just 4 groove barrel.

It is 4-groove barrel, but the big difference is one side of each land is canted: Similar to polygon rifling offered by the likes of Pac Nor, Schneider, etc. Supposedly these are easier to clean, provide a little longer barrel life, and buck wind better (probably due to less harsh of an imprint on the bullet, but that's just a guess). -Lee www.singleactions.com
