I have been looking for a good tight Winchester 1886 for a long time. Well, I found one yesterday at the RK gun show in Murfreesburo, TN. I had looked at it on a table and they told me they didn't own it. It was owned by a Friend of theirs and they couldn't do any trading. I had a couple of guns with me and a set of red stag grips for an Officers Model. I sold one of the guns and the grips. I went back to the table several times to check on it. I still didn't have enough money for the 86 and I was getting ready to call it quits and go home with my remaining gun. I was going toward the front door and saw this mountain of a man holding this 86 and I asked to see it. It was the same rifle I had looked at on the table. He had come to pick it up. I told him I had looked at it on the table and I was interested in his rifle. I asked if he would be willing to do any trading for it. He said he would if I had a Colt SAA and I just grinned. I reach in my holster and pulled out a Nichol 4 3/4" 38-40 3rd gen and his eyes lit up.
To make a long story short, we ended up trading. According to the letter from Cody, WY it was shipped in 1898 as a 40-82. It was sent back to Win. at some point and rebored to 45-70 and refinished. It is tight and the bore is pristine. It has a 26" round barrel and a shotgun but. It has some rust and pitting but in general is really sound.
To say I'm happy is an understatement.
