when gun season opens here in tennessee, i am taking my Seville 44 magnum with garrett hardcast 310 hammerheads at 1325. overkill? yep but i like it. any one else going out first with a pistola? i've got at least eight guns to rotate out and get something with each one. should be fun.

I am. Bisley 45 colt. The pistol is new to me, still not overly proficient with it yet. I'm good inside 50yds and hunt some pretty tight woods. Shots longer than that are rare and I know my limitations. Plan on taking my first handgun deer this year.

I will be taking a handgun . TC Contender 30-30 with 170grn Rem Core-Locks . This will be my first handgun only Deer hunt . I killed a Muley Doe many years ago with a .357 , but I had a rifle with me and only shot the revolver because the easy shot was there .

I most definitely will be. I don't own a shotgun or a deer calibered rifle. Likely it will be a scoped 44 Magnum or one of my Contenders. Still haven't decided which.

Well, my home state of Massachusetts is a shotgun/muzzleloader state. That opener starts the first monday after Thanksgiving. So I will not be handgun hunting for deer on my home state's opening day. I will hunt the opener of New Hampshire's deer season.
I may hunt NH muzzleloader where muzzleloading handguns are lawful. If I do so, I will use a Kahnke M82 single shot handgun. It has a 14" .50 caliber barrel with a Burris 2x scope mounted on it. Right now I fitted a Hubbard Mag Spark nipple to use a 209 shotshell primer. That way I can shoot Blackhorn 209 powder. I am loading it with 90 grains of Blackhorn 209 with a 250 grain sabot. It shoots very well.
For the NH general gun season I plan to hunt in SE NH where there is a restriction on what kind of firearm you use. You cannot use a centerfire rifle but you can use a shotgun, muzzleloader or a handgun with a straight walled handgun case. You will find me sitting in a treestand on opening day with a TC Contender in hand. The frame will have a Super 16 " barrel chambered in 44 magnum. I have a Burris 4x scope mounted on it right now and the main load will be a Speer Gold Dot SP 270 grain loaded over a maximum charge of Hodgdon's Lil Gun. I will sport my Ruger Redhawk in 44 magnum and carry the same load in it.
I am tempted to do some experimenting and try some of the new Speer Deep Curl bullets. I like the looks of the 44 caliber 240 grain Deep Curl hollow point. I loaded up some DCHP bullets for the Ruger . 480 last night and they are impressive.
Hmm. There is another thought. Maybe I should just use the Ruger .480 ? I have a Leupold 4x scope that can be mounted on it with the detachable rings.
Choices?

I've gotten a couple deer with my SBH, here in Ohio'er. Usually use an old '06 in Penn.. This yr, in Penn., may take one of the Ruger's and wade into the laurel jungle down the mountain and see what I can scare out. Here in Ohio, rare to be able to see/shoot 75yds.. In Penn forest, the shots run longer, and scoped rifle nice. But in the laurel jungle, your talking hands and knees stuff, all in bowhunting range, pistol should be best choice anyways, need free hands to climb and plow. steve b

I have killed a pile of deer with my 30-30 model 94. most of them on the other side of 150 yards. i imagine that contender is a handy little thing.

how's that kahnke shoot for you? the old man has a model 82 in 54 caliber that will go way over my head even with light roundball loads. with light loads, it will shoot bughole groups from what i remember. what kind of velocities do you get with 250s?

Before I killed my Shooting Chrony with a plastic gasket from a Buffalo Bore bullet I recorded muzzle velocities using H777 in the range of 1300 fps. I figure that puts it into the 44 magnum catagory. I would like to know what it does with the new powder but I don't have the funds for a new chronograph right now. In addition I seem to recall some loads using H777 and a 300 grain sabot in the same velocity range.

OM 41 Magnum Sierra 170 JHC at about 1500
MMMM Venison.
But I have to get an Elk first (375 GNR #2), then go bear hunting (7mm-08 Encore 10") and THEN get some venison with the 41 (2 Doe tags and one Buck).
I'll also be entertaining any offers to build me a walk in cooler. ;D

Never go afield hunting without a handgun of one type or another.

Nope, I'll have my long bow in hand. I save the guns for the late season.

Ruger Bisley Hunter with a red dot. I hunt creek bottoms that can get pretty dark. In more open areas usually a BFR .475 or my custom Bisley .45, both with irons.
