Got this this weekend. Serial No. 241XX, made in 1966. Great condition and some nice plum happening on the loading gate. The grip frame is starting to show signs of a color shift also. This gun has been fired but very little from the looks of it.

Clean, has anyone figured out a way to accelerate the plum? For that matter do the new ones turn plum?

I recently picked up this very nice 1965 sample. It has rocketed up to the #2 position of my most favorite handgun.

rep1954, That's nice. Good stags, as well! nobearsyet; The plum color is the result of a chemical reaction between the steel alloy and the silicon added to increase the "wetability". Silicon is added so the molten steel flows into all the "nooks and crannies" of the mold of the cylinder frame, loading gate, grip frame, etc. This one's been Factory reblued. The grip frame is even "plum". OK, one "collector" image. This one has the "long grip frame" which was the result of Bill Ruger listening to Elmer Keith and Herb Glass. Both suggested a "larger" grip frame on the .44 Flattop and both suggested one similar to the Colt's 2nd Model Dragoon style. Ruger had about 300 of them cast by a vendor. After testing in the Field it was decided to make a grip frame a little bit smaller. That 2nd iteration became the standard Super Blackhawk grip frame that's still in use today. Carl

I see, well, I'll keep my eyes out for plum Ruger's for you guys, me, I'll stick to blue worn and scratched, I don't feel so bad about cutting up something "collectible" that way
