I have been a member for a long as I can remember -- turn 63 this year.
All you guys/gals need to remember your state organizations as well. I've been a member of the Montana Shooting Sports Association for a long time. At the state level they actively promote/ introduce gun rights legislation. These organizations are responsible for the favorable concealed carry laws recently enacted in many states and other laws that benefit gun owners/self defense. When I get my membership renewal, I always send them an extra couple of hundred bucks.

I am still a member of the Ohio Sportsman's Alliance, even though I now live in Arizona, but it seems as though gun control is a total nonissue here

I'm a life member and also make yearly donations to the NRA (I work a half-mile from their headquarters so I'm constantly reminded of all the good work they do). -Lee www.singleactions.com

Good point on the State Associations... My daughter and I are life members of the Alabama State Rifle and Pistol Association... A good friend signed me up for the Texas State Rifle and Pistol Association last year. That looks to me a membership worth keeping!

I have to admit to just rejoining here last week.
Don't haze me yet.
When I was in Jr High and High school I was a proud member and shot Small bore and High Power rifle competitions, it was good fun but I was getting burned out on shooting holes in paper. Anyways the NRA called and asked if they could get my opinion of gun control and the state of the general union and all of that stuff. This guy was talking about big brother controlling us and how guns were our defense against a tryranical goverment and blah, blah, blah.
So about 45 minutes into the conversation that I was enjoying, not neccesarily buying 100% into from this very militant caller (still feel he was a extremely poor rep for the NRA) he told me "I hope you don't mind but we have been recording this conversation for future use!" I was pissed and still am to this day almost 20 years later. He spoke about "big brother" and here there were doing the very same things! We I told him to shove my membership somewhere uncomfortible and swore I would never be a member again!
Now 20 years later I have decided with the current administration that I need to get over my grudge and rejoin so I did. I have been a active and proud gun owner all of my life but I have never felt that the NRA was the "god" so many make them out to be...

I don't consider them to be the gun control defense god, but IMO they're the best we got right now

Yo NoBear! Tell me about the state association in AZ. You got a POC? I see lots of shooting competitions in the Tucson area in the NRA's Shooting Sports

Fowler nor do I, I found some of their position soft in the past. My biggest reason for being a member is because hey are the biggest and most well known. They get the media attention and the more members they can show the better for all of us.

I have been a life member since I'm 17. No reason not to be a member, the NRA has been offering free memberships and they have been our first line of defense.

I'm not a life member, but I am a member. I joined last year, when for the first time as an adult, I felt that our gun laws were REALLY in jepoardy. I agree that the NRA isn't the 'be-all-end-all', but as stated previously, they're about the best we have right now & every little bit counts. I need to call that number though, to have them get me off the garbage mail list. I don't need NRA health & life insurance, thank you. On a side note, this old sticker was on my 1976 Ford truck window when I bought it a few years ago...has to at least be 20 years old. When my new one arrived in the mail, I knew exactly where I was gonna put it!

During the negotiations on the assault weapon ban during the Clinton administation the Senate offered to exempt AR-15s because they were used in competition if the NRA would sign off on the rest of the ban. The NRA refused. As an owner of 3 AR15s I was a little PO'd at the time. But the NRA drew a line in the sand and I have to admire them for that.
