Just got a good deal on a like new 915 . $300 for the gun with 4 mags and a custom holster. Is there a good resource for working on the 3rd gen Smiths ? Can you get rid of the magazine disconnect? I'm assuming that would clean up the trigger pull a little.

What delineates a generation Smith & Wesson pistol or revolver? Do changes in lockwork constitute a new generation? As an old generation shooter, reckon my understanding could use an upgrade. S&W encountered serious hurdles in the manufacture of reliable and accurate auto pistols. Appreciate some enlightenment here, David Bradshaw

I am far from being a expert on Smith autos but I shoot with a group of retired cops that are pretty familiar with them. My understanding is the 2nd gen added a firing pin block and the 3rd Gen improvements were mostly external . The 915 coffee break ( I love that.) model number is actually pretty simple, 9mm15round capacity. It was made for 1992 to 1994.

David, the S&W autos went thru some iterations. The 1st Gen being what we know as the 59 and 39, they were alloy framed double stack and single stack 9’s. the 2nd Gen include both alloy and steel framed as well as a Stainless steel, they became the 459/439, alloy frame with sight and other internal improvements, the same but steel framed 559/539, and then the same but Stainless 659/639. All still full sized guns. Then 3rd Gen guns received more internal improvements and strengthening due to advent of 10mm and 45acp models as well as more compact and larger guns aimed at both emerging practical shooting and concealment desires. Within the 3rd Gen models sometimes referred to as 4th Gen or 3rd gen+ are some models with the improvements but less refined in outward appearance, more budget minded. Some regard the original 3rd Gen guns as the best S&W produced they were aimed at the competition crowd and the concealment crowd and took many improvements from Team S&W shooters (TSW) and companies such as Devel and ASP.

Now they are stuck on the M&P Shield moniker.
