Have a Single-Six again, after not having for a decade or so. I know, shame on me ! My first handgun, on my 21st B-day was a Single-Six. Looking back, cannot recall an ammo preferance. Have been shooting whatever I've had and break-in has been achieved, and the action tweeked slightly. Now time to dial it in. I would prefer a full, 40gr HP type, but will gladly read thru any and all opinions. Am looking to put together a short list to take to gunstore. say maybe 3-4 kinds. Something that comes in bricks for later, 50-100 round boxes for now, to test. steve b

I currently have two Single Sixes one prefers CCI Mini Mag HP's and the other prefers CCI Maxi Mag solids. That is if LR's and Mag's are the choice they both do there best with Winchester WRF rounds fired in the Magnum cylinders.

I've been shooting a lot of Federal's 36 grain copper plated 22LR (the value pack stuff). At $18 per 550, it's cheap and pretty accurate. -Lee www.singleactions.com

.22WRF thru the mag cylinder ? How different than the .22mag.. Bullets and velocity wise ? Considered safe ? Hmmnnn... steve b The 22WRF is the fore runner of the 22WMR it is shorter and not as powerful as the 22WMR. Shooting the 22WRF in a Ruger Single Six convertible revolver is like shooting a 44 SPL. in a 44Mag. or 38SPL. in a 357Mag. cylinder. The Single Six convertible comes with a barrel that has a groove and bore diameter made for the 22WMR which is the same for the 22WRF. The 22LR. uses a bullet that is .002" smaller than what the barrels are built for. One of the reasons that Rugers MKII/II/III are so much more accurate out of the box than the Ruger Single Sixes is that the barrels on the semi autos are grooved and bored for 22LR. Heres an article that might answer your questions better. www.chuckhawks.com/history_rimfire_ammo.htm

Do any of the Ruger revolvers use the correct sized barrel for 22LR e.g. Hunter, Talo, etc.?

Ok, got a box of Rem sub-sonic lead HP's. At camp, its the preferred night time load for Porkies. Next will be looking for some Win Power Point, 40gr,plated HP's. These were developed when Aussy pest control folks complained that the ever lighter, faster 22LR offerings were not reliably killing for them. So they came back out with a full 40gr load. Am looking for more of the .22mag Fed 50gr HP's too. May be the best load for it when critter size starts going up to 'Yote size,etc.. Also may be the best personal defensive load in that caliber. steve b

Yes, the guns made prior to the advent of the .22 magnum cartridge, i.e. '53 to '59, have the ".22 LR" barrels. All Single-Sixes after about s/n 150,000 have the slightly larger bore. My post '59 guns shoot very well with cheap ammo. Paco's Accurizer does indeed seem to help. Carl

steveb, For long rifle shells you might try Aguila. Their bullet diameters always seem to run a bit larger than most brands. Avg. dia. for 10 samples I checked was .2242. They shoot the best for any sensibly priced ammo in my N.M S.Six. Their 38 grn. HVHP is also 10% faster than other brands comarable 36 grainers over my chonograph.

Thanks Gunzo. Have used their 60gr sub-sonic. Another porky load, that will function thru self loaders usually. Have not ried their other offerings. Maybe after Church I'll swing by our local gun den and grab some. steve b
