Found a stainless 2.75" Security Six recently. Probably 95% overall condition. Used but not abused. What is a general price range on these? I don't find much on the short barrel SS values online. Thanks!

The Six series guns I’ve seen are priced like new guns, +10% if they’re in good shape and an additional premium for short barrel variants.
Ruger claimed they lost money on the Sixes but it looks to me like they could re-introduce them with an MSRP like S&W gets for their K series guns and sell every one they made. A 3” Wiley Clapp Six would be a nice EDC gun.

I've seen those in the $700-900 range with box and papers. +$100 for shipper in excellent condition.

With the security six selling for the price of a new gun goes to show you how well done they were. some put a premium on barrel length preference but snubs are getting scarce.

On average,, a used one in good condition, and not a rarer variation,, usually in the $550-$700 range.

For those whose mantra is compact power, it would be hard to find a more densely packed instrument than Bill Ruger’s Security Six. Among the Ruger vs Smith & Wesson battles, we may thank Ruger for S&W’s introduction of the L frame, a consequence of the fabled K frame Model 19 failing to hold up under a continuouss diet of .357 Magnum fire. Ruger’s Security Six didn’t know how to quit.
During a visit to the Speer-CCI factory in Lewiston, Idaho, an example was presented. A Model 19 used on the test range had been returned to S&W two or three times inside a year. Speer finally substituted a Security Six which, it was explained, was still ticking 30,000 rounds on. Laying this anecdote on Bill Ruger tweeked his mustache into a smile. As in, “What’d you expect?"
My fondness for the Model 19 comes from the interlude I packed one. Respectful of it limitations, the bulk of its diet consisted of .38 Specials and my mid-mag load: 158 SWC Hollow Point half-jacket swaged in the old C-H Swago-O-Matic press, DEEP SEATED over 12/Hercules 2400 in magnum brass with CCI 550 mag primer. Masterful service at Smith & Wesson, which included setting the barrel back to take up barrel face erosion, kept it humming.
Jerry Moran, personal friend, maestro of the Colt Python, prototype handgun silhouetter, and close friend of the Larry Kelly family, Bill Ruger, Jr., Lee Jurras----the list is strong----describes a Security Six or Speed Six (same gun with fixed sight) made for the U.S. Navy as especially indestructible. As if that were necessary.
Years ago I let a 6-inch Security Six go. Living morning noon and night with a 6-1/2” Model 29 on my hip, I thought I’d never miss the 6” Security Six. It wasn’t as pretty as the Smith. It’s accuracy lay right beside a proper Smith, its SA & DA trigger likewise, attributes which turn a gun into an instrument.
The pudding is on the Firing Line. David Bradshaw

BACK AROUND 1976 THE BORDER PATROL ACADEMY WAS IN CAMERON COUNTY, TEXAS (MY HOME COUNTY). THE ARMORER/GUNSMITH AT THE ACADEMY WAS, IIRC, A FELLOW NAMED PATTON (? ?), WHO WAS A PROPONENT OF THE SECURITY SIX AND SOLD THEM AS A SIDELINE. MY BROTHER AND I WENT OUT TO THE ACADEMY AND I BOUGHT A 2 3/4" AND HE A 4", BOTH SS, HIS WAS A LIBERTY MODEL. "On the spot" AND "lickety split" THE ARMORER DID A TRIGGER JOB ON BOTH. WHICH REMINDS ME, I THINK MY BROTHER JUST OWNS HIS, MAY TRY TO GET IT FROM HIM.
MY OTHER BROTHER HAS A 4" SS SECURITY SIX, AND I GOT HIM SOME NICE STAG GRIPS AND GIFTED HIM A RIGHT PROPER LAWRENCE HOLSTER. MY Compadre OSCAR HAS A 2 3/4" ROUND BUTT SS ONE (DO NOT RECALL IF IT IS FIXED SIGHT OR ADJUSTABLE SIGHT), HE CARRIES IT IN HIS PICK-UP.

I've had a Security Six in three barrel lengths and more than a few (blue and stainless) in 4" and that 4" barrel was magic. From McGivern's influence I learned to aerial shoot and (with Kentucky windage) whack pop cans at ridiculous distances. Even though I don't often shoot .357's, one day I'll find another 1976 in stainless with a 4" barrel to replace the ones I had.

The Gun that started it all for me. Was a 6-inch blue Security 6 that belong to my brother-in-law. We were shooting blazer aluminum 38 specials. I was mildly interested and shooting about like you would expect a guy who never shot a gun before to shoot. He had a Savage 99 in .308 too, and I saw a coke can on a rise about 80 yards away. Missed it 3 times with the Savage. Had one last round left in the revolver. Just for laughs I pointed it at the can. The can jumped 2 feet strait up in the air. You would have thought I had just scored the winning touch down in the Super Bowl. Instantly hooked. Bought my 1st revolver a week later...tj

What I have seen over the years of collecting the Security Six, Police Service Six (it actually started out as a fixed sight Security Six) and the Speed Six, either blued or stainless, it all depends on where you are located in the USA. CA, OR, WA and the Northeast states are going to command higher prices. Lower middle America and the southern states prices are more reasonable for the average buyer. That said, when you are looking at rarer models and the snubbies, they will typically command a higher price. If everything is included (original box, original paperwork, shipper, etc.) then the price climbs even more. Ultra rare are going to be even higher (I just got a 2 3/4" stainless .357 Mag Security Six WITH a high back (post 150- s/n) round butt grip frame (and the letter from Ruger confirms it was a factory produced gun) and I paid $950 for it.

Value? Priceless when it shoots good. 3×5 index cards look real small at 50yds and my poor eyes make those fixed sights on the Service Six look even smaller. I need to get a Security Six to try.
