Has anyone used black powder in big bores like a 475L or 500L or 480 Ruger? I was just kind of curious what kind of accuracy and velocity you had. I think it might be kinda like real impressive late in the evening to touch it off and even hunt with providing it was up to it.

I think your velocity would be somewhat low considering the case capacity. If you think about a 50-70 shooting a 440, it may do 1250 from a 26” barrel with a 1.75” case. Thats with some compression most likely. I guess there’s no harm in trying it though to see what happens 🤣

Black powder in really large bore big cartridges was the thing since Sam Colt did the Walker. Lots of data out there. Remember the 45 Colt was a powerful black powder cartridge!

Not expecting anything awe inspiring but if it would hit the 850-900 fps with a 350–400 grain bullet that would be most acceptable.

I believe bula experiments with his 480 and black powder for fun. I'm sure he'll chime in eventually.

Yup ! I didn't follow the usual rules due to low volume use only. I found the little Lee yellow dipper that filled to where base of bullet would be, plus enough to have a sure level of compression. I used FFFG and CC I350 primer. Was a hoot ! Just used the Missouri 340 PC'd bullets commonly found in my basement. Performance very TB-like. Did not chrono. Was a hoot, and loads with more proper bullets in 44spec , just because. A softer bullet, and soft lube preferred if you want to get thru more than 1 cylinder. Here, I can shoot and walk 15ft to a sink with hot water and dish soap available, clean up not a worry. By all means, TRY IT !

OL' Elmer called the Remington BP loads of 40 grs. of Fffg and the 250 gr. RNFP adequate for anything. I assume that can be bettered with your cartridges?

I've loaded HB 405's in my 45 Colt over BP.

Don't forget, Clements converted some Old Armies to 50 cal. I don't remember the velocities, but they were respectable, and with 777 they were serious. Black in either one of those cartridges would handle most anything. For cleanup with my revolvers, I use hot water out of the faucet, rinse, swab the bore, 2 dry patches, oil. Glass cleaner is as fast or faster.

I have used cheap old windshield washer fluid for years and it gives the job done for cleaning

Case full of 777 in a 45 colt will definitely kill a 100 ish pound Florida deer, pass through and dead right there.
