So I've got a new Lipsey's Blackhawk convertible .45 Colt with a 3.75" barrel. I am looking to purchase a decent hunting holster for it. I'm looking at Diamond D Alaskan Hunter, possibly cross draw.
Any other nice options out there that don't break the bank?

I have a Diamond D chest rig,, AND a Barranti NW Hunter.
BARRANTI by far.
We call Mike Barranti "Doc" for a serious reason. Long ago, well known gun man, sheriff, Border patrol, gun rag writer,, Skeeter Skelton made a serious comment; "Next to my doctor,, my holster maker is the most important person I know." I look at hunting with a serious intent of doing it right. And top quality equipment can make a BIG difference. It may cost a bit,, but the quality is the best. Get the Barranti that fits your desires. You won't be sorry.

My single six has been riding in a Hunter1100 for close to 50 years. The SS has been frozen into the holster while hunting in an Ice storm,(that was a dumb idea) We have gone through the ice, been dunked in fresh and salt water, rolled and slid down gravel banks, pushed out way though miles of brambles, and been a constant companion on the waters and in the field. Both the SS and the Hunter show their age and wear, but both are in better condition than I am. Can't speak for today's quality, but if it's anywhere near as good as yesterday's Hunters I couldn't recommend them any more highly.

ARE YOU LOOKING FOR SHOULDER/CHEST CARRY, A PANT BELT HOLSTER OR A GUN BELT HOLSTER? NOT SURE WHAT YOU MEAN BY A "hunting holster". FOR A PANT BELT HOLSTER I REALLY LIKE THE EASY ON AND OFF FEATURE OF DOC's LONGHORN COMPANION AND BIGBORE's TEXAS SIDEKICK.

I have three of these holsters including two for 3-3/4" guns. One is strong side, and one is cross draw -- the gun is a 44 special Vaquero. This would be a good option for you.

Take a look at Simply Rugged. I have several of his holsters.

I am considering chest rigs too but leaning towards a belt holster, probably cross draw to keep it away from my rifle butt when I have it shouldered. By hunting holster I mean something that I will carry in while I am rifle hunting in the woods/mountains so it needs good retention to avoid accidental loss. That Barranti looks like it would fill the bill nicely.

I've been using an M3 tanker holster repop for 25ish years and can tell you that there isn't a better holster type/carrying format. They're quick on/off, out of the way, comfortable enough to forget it's there. I cut a few stitches near the trigger guard put a longer retention strap on it, now it carries anything I hunt with. Look at the Barranti, El Paso Saddelry 1942, Diamond D, Simply Rugged Chesty Puller, all good options. I'm sure there's more I'm not aware of

When looking for retention consider a sam Browne stud or hammer loop over a snap for a strap, they are less likely to become inadvertently unsecured. Plus they are silent in removal should you decide to use the handgun over the rifle.

I've used Chest Rigs by Diamond-D, Galco, Badlands leather and a couple of others for some years now. By far my favorite is the Guide's Choice by Diamond D followed by the Great Alaskan by Galco. There's also a lot to be said for the Tanker as it allows carry more off to the side of the body; you may find that better for shouldering a rifle.

Too many holster makers make hunting style rigs with LOUD retention devices.

For what it's worth, my Barranti NW Companions have hammer loops rather than snap straps.
