Anyone here with experience shimming a red dot? I’ve run out of vertical adjustment to lower the group size.

Not sure on these but easy find for shim stock is a cheap set of feeler gauges from the parts house.

Soda cans work for me. Just cut em to size. Cheap and easy.

Several layers of tin foil would work as well. Depends on how much shimming it needs.

I assume it’s on a handgun?!?! Many of the mounts will allow pitch to be altered slightly. Once you get it zeroed simply use wicking grade Loctite and it should solidly hold it all in place. If your mount does not allow for adjustment, there are plenty of materials suitable for shim work. Like Trey, I’ve used aluminum cans as well as plastic water bottles for material.

Yes it’s a handgun. Now do you shim just the rear to cant it forward? Shim goes between dot and mount or gun and mount ? Thanks to all for ongoing help!

I would think the shim would need to go between the mount and the gun as most red dot sights are designed to mount flush to the mounting plate. That way it seals/contains the battery in the housing. I have two JPoint reflex sights and they have 2° shims designed for their sights that stack between the sight and the mount.

Emailed Holosun and got a question as a response. Am I Sighting at least 20 yrds, so there is room for internal adjustment? Which I am sighting at 25 yrds. Waiting to hear back.

Much depends on how the sight is mounted in the first place. Do you have any pics you can post? Is there a mounting plate involved, or is the sight mounted directly to the slide? Is this a rail type mount, like a Picatinny? Revolver, or semi-auto?

Holosun got back to me , gotta say they are very prompt with their email communication! They want the sight back to give it a look, after I emailed back that it prints 3” high at 25yards. They are emailing a pre paid shipping label. Have to mention again I started the email chain late in the day on a Friday thinking they would get back to me next week! Completely surprised with the first contact even more with the second hours later. So far so good!

I have the same problem with a holosun i just mounted on a 500 x frame. Shooting way high at 20 yards and probably didn't make a full turn on adjustment and it bottomed out. The mount was a alchin mount. May try the whole set up on a n frame 627 and see if if it shoots high also. The loads in the 500 were a usa headstamped brass 300 grain bullets. Pretty tame load for a 500 recoil wise. Wonder if a faster load would make any difference ? I really like that 2 moa dot.

Between huntin and working i ain't had time to load up heavier loads or to even swap guns. The rut is starting up and I'm trying to spend as much time as possible in the woods..
