So I know this is a single action forum, and believe me I’ve got plenty of single action hunting stories to share but for now, just wanted to post up some success. I got this Savage 99 a few years ago from a friend. He called one day and asked if I knew anyone in the market ( which he knew full well that I was). So I guess you could say that he good advantage of our friendship. Anyway, it was in pretty rough shape both the wood and the metal, but with a little judicious woodworking and some sandpaper, files, Tru oil and cold blue I thought it came out pretty nice. Good for a user rifle. And it shot so good that how could I not take it hunting. The old steel tube Weaver even tracked perfectly and has apparently held a zero for many, many years so it stayed on. So with 41 grains of Varget under a 150 Partition it seems to just be the ticket for a mule deer. The little .300 Savage really accomplishes a lot with a minimum of fanfare. So here’s the result of the Idaho 2024 deer season. If you guys are interested I can post up the process of the restoration. Enjoy.

That rifle looks just like it left the factory yesterday, you did a good job. Oh, and the buck isn’t too bad either. 😁

Well done, I’d taken my 99 in 250sav. to Wyoming for antelope this year but circumstances forced me to use a pre64 M70 instead. My 300sav. Is another favorite as well.

NEAT LOOKING RIFLE.
HANDLOADER OR RIFLE MAGAZINE HAD AN ARTICLE A FEW YEARS BACK ON LOADING FOR THE 300 SAVAGE 99 USING 150 RN BULLETS AND, IIRC, VARGET POWDER.
99's IN 300 SAVAGE, 22 SAVAGE HI-POWER AND 303 SAVAGE (2) STILL RESIDE HERE.

If you're going to use a rifle use a cool one! That qualifies as cool! I have a 1924 99E in .303 Savage. I carry it once every 3 or 4 years.

I AM TAKING 4 RIFLES UP TO MY "RIFLE ONLY" Punta del Monte HUNTING LEASE (TO LEAVE THERE FOR THE 4 MONTH SEASON STARTING THIS SATURDAY), 2 ARE 99's, ONE A 1920's 22 SAVAGE HI-POWER AND THE OTHER A FACTORY D&T'ed 99-F IN 300 SAVAGE. I HAVE HAD THE 300 SAVAGE FOR MANY YEARS BUT HAVE NEVER TAKEN IT A FIELD, I MAY START OUT USING IT HOPING FOR A FEW HOGS IN THE EARLY SEASON.

Nice job, if you post your story, I will read it. Cool rifles.
