What think guys? I been messing around with these two in a short barrel 44 and darned if they don’t seem to be about the same. Both similar speeds and accuracy. In fact they seem to be as close as diderent lots of the same powder. They aren’t quite identical in terms of appearance but they weigh within a couple tenths with same rotor settings. Here are a couple loads- 11 gr Longshot, 260 rcbs Keith Ave 1057 ES 30 11 gr 572, 260 rcbs Keith Ave 1060 ES 38 Both shot together within 10 minutes of time. Group at 25 favored 572 slightly but might have been me. Both turned in some of the best groups for that gun

That is quite a resemblance between the two, would be interesting to see a psi comparison as well.

What do you have more of for powder? Longshot is probably easier to replace these days…

messybear.... call Hodgdon tech, ask if the two are the same. If so, Longshot may be Hodgdon’s name for Winchester 572. David Bradshaw

Unique has been hard to find and like to keep what’s left for what really likes it. This gun hasn’t been partial to bullseye and unique. But Herco, Universal, Power Pistol, CFE have been pretty good accuracy wise. Along with LS and 572

I'm watching this thread closely. I bought a bunch of 572 and 4# of 244 at a LGS a few years ago. It was giveaway prices because they couldn't unload it.
Perhaps I should break some out and give it a try.
I've got Power Pistol ordered and stocked up on Longshot today.
After 45 years I've finally started flexing on my Unique and 2400 only mentality...

Little update- Fowler, I think I mistook the meaning of your question. You likely meant which one do I have the most of? Just a few of each. And I get it now, you say LS probably easier to find to keep on hand. David, thanks for tip. I have a message in to them now. Will report back as to their reply. Thanks for responses guys. One thing I forgot, and this is just observation, nothing proven or statistical. It seems like these loads are “kind” to a plain base lubed bullet. I watch for things such as flash or painting of lead on face of cylinder as well as barrel leading. Not seeing much of either. In a 6” model 29 these run 1130 fps. About where I want to be for a moderate load for the old gun.
Can anyone run this load in quick load? Thanks

Thanks Yes Messy that was my thinking, I run PowerPistol a lot but it can be hard to come by and isnt cheap when it is, the 6lb I have on hand seems way to thin for a back stock of this great powder. That said Longshot is very similar to Power Pistol, seems readily available, $20 a pound cheaper, and from my limited testing seems every bit the equal of PowerPistol for mid range big bore revolver loads or high performance semi auto loads. I think I need to do some more formal testing to prove my early observations out but I know a couple commercial reloaders using Longshot heavily for these tasks. PowerPistol will likely continue to be my go to but it would be nice to have a back up if we get thin on unavailable stock. I have zero experience with 572 I'm afraid.

Fowler, Amen to that!!! I just opened a box from Midway that brings my Power Pistol Stash up a bit. Not as well stocked as I would like, but better than I was yesterday.
I'll continue to add some here and there...hopefully.
Longshot is readily available. I'm well stocked on it, but continue to add a pound here and there.

I'm using a lot of Longshot in several calibers & it works great. I have a few pounds of Power Pistol but limited experience with it although results have been good & zero experience with Win 572. I spotted a bunch of it two days ago & should have bought some just to get on the powder train like everyone else but I'm still holding out with Unique, Longshot & 2400, with some 231 & WST thrown in.

An update on the question. Got a reply from Hogdon. They say they are NOT the same powder. So there you have it. Might just be my application. I have not tried it yet in different calibers to see if I start to see differences there. I have pictures of groups if anybody is interested. Don’t know how to post yet.
