I recently lost my friend to cancer possibly caused by "Agent Orange". He has had three rounds with different levels of success and this time he didn't have the energy to fight it. Last time I saw him he couldn't open his eyes but let us know he could hear us. Wasn't much of a visit. He passed two days later.
I went to our favorite gunshop to tell the owner that I didn't want to do this over the phone but wanted to tell him in person that our friend had passed. After the pre-requisite apologies and such he said he still had the last firearm our friend put on consignment for sale. He was selling off firearms that he couldn't operate or stand the recoil from anymore for years. He was down to 22lr only.
My gun store owner friend came back with a Ruger MK-I taper barrel still new in the box. I said lets do the paperwork. He asked didn't I even want to know the price and I said no. It was my friends firearm and I am taking it home. Box, paperwork, tax and a new firearm was mine for 417.00. I was delighted to get the firearm in the box for the price asked and to take another part of my friend home. It is unremarkable as far as pictures go but it is worth much more than that for someone who loved that man and coming from the man who called my sons his own grandkids.

The price has nothing to do with the worth of some guns. Sorry to hear of the loss of your friend.

I too will extend my heartfelt sympathy for the loss of your friend. I know how you feel. One week ago today, I too lost a close friend. He was also a Vietnam vet. He got his instructor in SCUBA, and his very first class, I was his safety diver and assistant. For almost 3 decades we taught diving, and I too got my master instructor trainer certification. But he was more than just a friend, he was a mentor. I watched his kids grow up and we were all like family.
While he hunted and fished and all, he only had a few guns. His son will have them.
But reading your post, and feeling very much like you, it makes me smile knowing you were able to get a gun that was your friends gun. Priceless. I know you will treasure it!

Sorry to hear about your friend. My friend Wayne died from Covid about 3 years ago, still think of him. His Dog Magnum(a Great Pyrenees) passed last week and was cremated. Next week, I'm accompanying his widow to put Magnum's ashes with Wayne.

Sorry for your loss but I am happy that you got something to remember him by and to keep those memories alive as you use that firearm! No better memorial! In today's world, finding people worthy of being called a friend is getting more and more difficult.
