Here is my first 10 days. Leaving early Thursday for Colorado elk. My primary is the top gun which is a BFR in .454 Casull, firing a home grown 265 grain A-frame at over 1700 FPS. My backup is the bottom gun…another BFR in .50 JRH. This one is fed by 440 cast solids somewhere between 1200 and 1300 FPS if I recall correctly. I return from Colorado next Thursday and will stop at my deer lease in Texas for the gun opener on Saturday November 2nd. The .50 JRH takes the mound for that weekend. It’s been at least 15 years since I’ve hunted with cast solids and I really don’t know why I’m itching to do so but I am. I’ve become a staunch believer in the various forms of jacketed or mono metal, but I’m curious. Pretty sure the 1/2 incher in 440 grains will handle our Texas deer aka ‘oversized Jack rabbits’, just fine. I’d REALLY like to send one through a good size hog. The knife…is by none other than Kim Ralston. I plan to abuse this blade a lot this season and anoint it properly with a plethora of red bubbly oxygen. BTW, his craftsmanship is disturbingly good. Check him out if you haven’t already @ralston Knives. The holsters are my own (Backcountry Leather Goods) in my new Texican series. Chest rig with interchangeable holsters.

Good luck on your upcoming hunts Randy. You can't beat a good Ralston knife.

Good luck on your upcoming hunts Randy. You can't beat a good Ralston knife. Completely agree. I have two of them and both are superb. Plus, Kim is a fine gentleman and fun to have in camp. He’s also a ‘cut up’ and tells some good stories around a campfire.

Good luck, it was HOT in Wyoming and the elk in the property had moved farther north and off the plains and sagebrush draws and drainages. I did get to try out my new Ralston on a pronghorn doe, the little 2” blade doing fine work.
I would be curious how your 440 cast does on our deer, my first first use of them was discouraging on a pronghorn doe. 465gr. WFN from my 500Max at about your speeds, broadside thru shoulder and vitals, eventually an unintentional high shoulder dropped her followed by one thru her nose and out between the ears, as she lay down looking at me from 40ish yards, ended the story. I concluded too much bullet and not enough target resistance, as well as possible poor placement in ribcage and not shoulder. It was difficult to say which of the 3 first shots was actually the first since all were within 4-5 inches, and all with the same broadside presentation. It also made me aware of the roll expansion plays for medium game, a good combination of it and penetration do much better than too much of one and not the other.
