well, i always wanted to take a 500L (what i really want is a 50-70 Gummint) out hunting deer. i picked the 500 Linebaugh in a 23" MGM barrel for my Encore about 6 or 7 years ago. i found a load back then and i just plain forgot about the 500L. i had Skinner sights put on it and i love the aperture sight, but i just didn't like it. instead, i went to 2-7x Leopold scope and i like it. the 500L is a 1 in 20" twist and i don't know about handguns rate of twist, but it is around 1:14" to 1:24" twist. anyway, i shoot the (.512") 450gr LFN with HS-6 going 1235fps. the 500L will do around 2" - 2 1/2" group at 100 yards (5 shots/bench). i have done a 5 shot, 1 1/4" group at 100 yards but that was the Shooting Gods smiled upon me  !!! anyway, i took the 500L and put it on my Encore, took a bunch of cartridges and headed to my shooting range. i shot 3 as my first group that was right on top of each other and it was 1" to right, right on up and down. the next 3 shot were right on. i then proceeded to empty out all of cartridges. i did a 25 shot group, 3" to 3 1/4" at 100 yards. i think i am ready for deer season;). 500L with 450gr LFN, Skinner sights

Sounds like you oughta be ready to slay’em. I have thought about doing something along those lines as well. Looking forward to a good report on its effectiveness on said creature.

Very nice!
I have a near identical MGM setup in 50 AK that sees 500 L HS6 loads as well. Really doesn't kick too bad.
Mine has fiber optic open sights and a 1-4 Zeiss in a QD mount for woods walking. The balance is good because with a bore that size the barrel doesn't weigh a ton.
I'm interested in a field report as well. Dad has been carrying mine at the ranch looking for a pig but so far no luck.

Call Shiloh and have them build you a 50-70! I have a 50-70 they will be starting in December. I can’t wait to get it next Spring! Such a cool old round.
That 500L will be a hammer for you for sure! Good luck!

Understood! John always said the 500 was basically the 50-70 this fit on your belt. Hard to beat a 500 honestly.

i was shooting the 500L today at my 50 yards target. i am using hearing protection earmuffs and WOW!!!! the thwap of the boolit going into 4x4" is almost as the BOOM. BO...THWAP, BO...THWAP.... oh yeah, the 450gr LFN goes thru two 4x4" and into a pile of dirt (i tried my measuring stick, 18 or 20" and i couldn't find it). for only going 1235fps from the muzzle, it sure does penetrate.

If you think those 450's are impressive, get you some 1680 powder and the MP 512-525 mold.

i think i will stay with the HS-6, i like the load and it doesn't bother my shoulder. i never had 1680, what is like? Unique, 2400 or Win296?

Never had it either, believe it to be slower yet than 110/296.

Unique, 2400 or Win296? 1680 is a couple notches slower than H110/W296 on the burn rate chart. I think it's right at home in the larger caliber "Maximum" cartridges. It might also play well in the 500L with the right bullet, but it doesn't seem to be the first choice powder-wise... 500 Linebaugh Load Data
