Run away! Like an old friend, working in a gun shop, once told me, the hard thing is learning you can't have everything! FWIW the new stuff passing through isn't much of a concern. Getting first shot at the old stuff coming though is a budget killer. Helps me to show stuff off here. Not taking it home, just showing it to everyone.
Also helps that while I have ready access to everything in the shop, my job is managing the indoor shooting range. Helps buying guns but ammo seems to evaporate!

Many good thoughts here.
I used to have a running account at a gun shop decades ago. Then I got in a financial bind. I went to the owner, discussed my situation and asked if I could work off my account. He needed some building help and hired me. But he also needed help in the store with sales. What started as a way to pay off my account just turned into more guns for me.
Just remember, it could be a lot worse. Your wife could get a job trying to sell her favorite stuff like maybe shoes or clothes.

The local gunsmith I mentioned earlier. Man his eyes would light up if he saw something a neat/old/interesting. Course, he talked about guns with everyone, but he the people that hung around had the same passion for guns he did.
I think that it depends a lot on who you talk guns with.

HANGING AROUND GUNSHOPS CAN ALSO YIELD RESULTS. BACK IN THE 20tH CENTURY I WAS AT A LOCAL GUNSHOP WHEN A FELLA WALKED IN AND WANTED TO SELL A WOLF & KLAR, NICKLELED AND ENGRAVED, 4" 44 SPECIAL WITH GENUINE MOP GRIPS, HE GOT $300 AND I STILL HAVE THE GUN. ANOTHER TIME, AT ANOTHER LGS, MY BUDDY, THE OWNER, TOLD ME ABOUT A NICE WWI ERA GERMAN LUGER/WWII BRING BACK THAT A GRANNY BROUGHT IN TO HAVE THE FIRING PIN REMOVED SO SHE COULD GIVE IT TO HER GRANDSON. I TOLD HIM TO OFFER HER $500 FOR ME, SHE TOOK IT. MY BUDDY ASKED GRANNY "WELL WHAT ABOUT YOUR GRANDSON?" AND SHE SAID "OH I'LL JUST GET HIM A BB GUN". STILL HAVE THE LUGER (IT CAME WITH 2 MATCHING CLIPS).

Had a few strange things get carried thru the door but the most terrifying was a German Grease gun with several loaded mags and a loaded mag in it with one in the chamber. I had know idea what it was. Just happened to be stand at the was a Big time German Collecter. After unloading it and put it back In the duffle bag and he said follow me! Saw the collecter afew day later and was told he bought it bag and all.

I worked one between shifts at the Sheriff's Office removing cosmoline from import 98K's. Boy, those were the days! Every three shifts I got to take home one of the 69.99 dollar Mausers. I never made a cent but my collection got pretty cool!

I worked in a gun shop for a while.
I got several threatening calls a day from vendors looking for money owed.
Come payday, I'd have to take my wages from the till before the boss showed up or take what he owed me in merchandise, which I discounted heavily for myself, because I knew what he'd paid for it and I really actually needed the cash instead of more stuff.
I did get some good stuff and pretty much had first pick on stuff that came in, but I turned that guy a lot of bucks each Saturday - more than had come in all week usually.
My hourly wage was $2.75/hr, so I usually did better if I took merchandise in lieu of cash anyway.

I worked in one part time for a few months, my third job at the time, FT auto mechanic, part for a moving company doing evictions in the local big city and weekends and evenings there. I made a little income, saved a little on a couple items, and got great deals on stuff "no one wanted" like a Lone eagle in .358 I wish I hadn't sold. 10mm and 41 mag were in that category back then too.

Anything catch your eye today?? Lol A couple of interesting Bergaras that came in were interesting but I don’t need them. A gentleman came in to pick up a nice Colt 1909 New Service and a Colt SAA .41 Colt. The 1909 had good blue but non original grips plus a Tyler T grip. The SAA was devoid of any blue but in good shape mechanically. Had another Colt SAA come in that dated to 1901 but sadly had been renickled and not very well. It had some funky clear acrylic grips with a rose inset inside. Most of the barrel markings had been polished off. I hated to have to tell him that no it was not worth $8000 that some guy at a gun show told him.
