By now pretty much everyone knows how much of WNC got destroyed by Helene. Our area is mountainous with a lot of small communities, bridges that are the lifeline to so many people and places. And that includes a ton of single driveways to homes. The flooding was extreme and took a lot of lives. Rescue efforts are underway but extremely difficult to get to lots of people due to many roads and bridges that are gone.
But I have been chuckling about one rescue effort that has been very successful and harkens back to the way our mountain folks used to live. Mules. There is a group of people who have mules that are able to get to places that machines just canāt get to. Gotta love the mules and the folks who have them. Thinking of you Robb!

I've had these volunteer Mule packing rescuers in mind a lot lately, too, Tyrone. Of course, that makes me think of Robb, too.

Yeah we packed mule for elk camp for years and the thought that they could be doing a lot of good back there right now has not been lost in my mind.

I saw that about those folks using mules to get supplies in to isolated folks and am not a bit surprised. Years ago at an environmental conference one of the speakers talked about what Oregon would be like after the big earthquake hits. In the end they said if you had a water source and a good mule, you could surviveš¤£.

I saw videos of that and sent it to the rancher/guide we know. He's run thousands of loads on mules hauling everything from camp supplies for hunters to building supplies for backcountry projects to hauling out deceased people for the park service. Those mules can do it all and they should get more attention.
The saying right now is "one redneck/blue collar friend is worth 100 master's degree in times like this."

"A Country Boy can Survive" or the more modern "A Country Boy Will Survive". Those two songs sum it all up.

Just suggested to Dougader, he may want to order whatever favorite delivery food they can still get delivered. May be awhile after tonite.
