I have posted before about buying a sporting BAR with a chopped off barrel. I plan on moving forward with a new or new to me barrel for it. Numerich has them at a reasonable price for a like new factory barrel with sights. I am asking advice on this one because the only rifles I have rebarreled were Mausers so I dont know much of anything about rebarreling a semiauto. If anyone has any tips, pointers, cautionary tales or just plain "dont do it"s, I would like to hear about them. I already have finishing reamers and other hand tools to final cut the chamber if it is needed including a "go" headspace gauge. I am a kitchen table gunsmith and my experience is limited, so I am asking the collective before buying a barrel I cant change out. Thanks all.

Trey.... Jack Huntington may have experience, or suggest a smith. Bolt timing is important on a gas operated autoloader. Some of the most disgusting rifles I’ve handled are M1 Garands cobbled from parts by incompetents. World of difference between a proper arsenal overhaul and a gun show M1.
The BAR (and Remington Model 742, etc) hunting rifles have the M1 Carbine-style gas piston. Although the hunting autoloaders eliminate the Garand operating rod, simplifying the mechanism, they are neither finger-strippable nor nearly as reliable as John Garand’s M1. David Bradshaw

I saw a BAR that had the barrel rebored/chambered for 9.3x62 on Gunbroker recently.
Talk about a lead chucker!

338-06 would be a cool conversion, too.

Trey.... spoke with Kenny Kelly (Mag-na-Port), son of Larry & Barbara Kelly. Kenny has a good memory of his father's BAR .458 Win Mag, says was built by Bob Snap of Snap’s Gun Shop in Claire, Michigan. “Bob Snap was a master gunsmith,” said Kenny.
As for barreling your BAR to .338 Win Mag, I had one on consignment; compared to bolt actions a muffin for recoil. I shot some IHMSA ram silhouettes @ 400 yards, offhand, toppling 4x4. Scope was a Leupold Vari-X III 2.5-8x with Leupold mount. Cranked to 8x as I recall. Ammo a favorite factory load----Federal Nosler 210 Partition. BAR barrel a heavy taper 24” with 1:10” RH twist and no iron sights. That rifle had my preferred plain receiver----no engarving----walnut handle, and predates the bolt latch.
It’s my impression all BAR magnums use the same barrel contour, which means the .300 Win Mag and 7mm Rem Mag are heavier than the .338. A woman who was a beautiful body builder and good silhouette competitor shot the BAR .338 very well offhand. Recoil didn’t bother her. Gas operation certainly attenuates recoil. David Bradshaw

Mine is the slick (no engraving) receiver. I have shot the 300 Win Mag barrel and I have 308's that kick harder. If I had known about these things sooner I would have a stable full of them.

Doesn’t do anything a 35whelan won’t do, except the bullets for it are matched to the velocity much better than 358 caliber rifles. That would be a pig killing, bear hunting ,machine right there!! Plus heavier bullets than normal .358’s

I sure wouldn't mind adding that caliber to the stable. Not knowing much about the caliber, are the cases made from anything else or are they exclusive to that chambering?

The base diameter is a few thousandths wider than ‘06, but ‘06 brass works well for making 9.3x62. Not ideal, but it works. However, 9.3x62 brass is quite plentiful. So are bullets.

I have a LH bolt Mauser 9.3x62 and use just cast bullets so far and Whitetail,s have very little chance of get away when it barks. I keep saying I need to find larger test subjects. Anyone got a moose that needs shot?

I shoot cast out of a 338-06, 35 Whelen and a 375 H&H. Havent found a pig yet that will stop any of those bullets and tracking jobs are short. Real short.
