Has anyone experimented with the cup point bullet cast harder so it doesn't expand on actual game or on gel?
Just toying with the theory that it would increase hydraulic shock wave intensity in game without overly losing momentum and penetration at the same rate an expanding bullet would.
I know it's going to give up a small amount of penetration over a solid flat point, but it should far out penetrate the conventional or penta hp's.
Just a theory before I get to sleep, but there might be something to it.

Yes, Bearskinner did use the cup HP on his elk, don't remember his alloy but it worked as advertised. I think he just sweetened it up a bit to make it a little harder. Works great to delay or even eliminate expansion when using the cup HP or other HP's.

Using a cup point cast bullet of “one” of my calibers is one of my goals this coming season. But I won’t be making it harder. I’ll likely keep it around 11-12 and just powder coat it.

AM I DREAMING OR DID I SEE A NEGATIVE POST ON THIS FORUM FROM huntingafield RE A CUP POINTED MONOLOTHIC BULLET OR SOMETHING?

AM I DREAMING OR DID I SEE A NEGATIVE POST ON THIS FORUM FROM huntingafield RE A CUP POINTED MONOLOTHIC BULLET OR SOMETHING? You did. The hammers mono metals slipped through with near zero tissue disturbance like one would expect a round nose fmj to do. They have very small “cup points” and the nose radius looks like something most would expect to feed well in a semi auto.

Some of this really doesn't make a difference as I haven't recovered but one bullet in some very big deer, BUT it may be of concern to those of you who shoot very large heavily muscled animals. It would be nice to hear just how many guys do recover bullets and out of what all dependent on what they shoot them with.

I am just thinking about it over a flat point for the HHC and Water Buff next time. Either way I plan to use the MP 512-525 in a 7-1/2" BFR 500 Linebaugh. I'll probably use Hardball alloy

The fp solid has my complete confidence. I got into a really sticky situation with a hippo before when the 325gr SSK bullet skidded on an unexpected encounter one night when I stepped away to pee. Started my looking at other designs.

I haven’t done extensive testing with the cup points, but looking at video and pics of the initial impact with cup points to over flat nose bullets, shows a fairly larger “splash” entering the water jugs. Penetration and weight retention was almost identical, but HP or especially Penta points, are spectacular on impact, but are severely limited in penetration. I’ve only recovered one 41 mag bullet (260 grain) cast, gas check, powder coated., from a 138 yard (1330fps) shoulder shot on a little elk. I’ve also tested 390 grain .475 bullets solid, cup, and penta points. Again flat nose and cup points, no noticeable difference in penetration, but a little extra “slap” on impact. The Penta impacted dramatically, but much less penetration. Here’s a couple pics of bullets from my very unscientific observances. I don’t use a bullet hardness tester either. I place a test subject on an anvil, and start impacting it with a 4 pound sledge. The preverbal rock and hard place. Attachments:

I’ll learn more on the next Africa hunt. I’m taking these two (41 mag, 475 Linebaugh) Long barrel FA83’s with 25 animals on my list. This hunt will be all plains game, from Springbok up to Eland and Giraffe, so I’m not sure I will even recover any bullets, but IF I can recover any, lots will be learned. You can see on the above pics, the (475 cal) penta point lost 3/8’s of its weight, which on smaller animals up to elk size would create a much larger initial impact, but would probably still completely clear an elk sized animal from the side. A full frontal shot would be interesting for depth and wound channel information. Not my preferred usual shot.
