I'm looking to hear some of y'all's pet loads for the MP 454-640, both standard and Ruger only, in the 45 Colt. I'm wanting to start working with this bullet in my Rugers as a lighter weight hunting round. My regular hunting bullets are 315 and 345 grains, but the hp option in a lighter bullet should be better for deer.

It’s a FANTASTIC bullet. I have shot many many many many of them! I run a loads for it.
Starline case, 10.0gr of Power Pistol, Rem 2 1/2 primer (Fed 150 works well also) and of coarse the 454-640….normally keep the pentas well stocked runs around the 1050fps mark.
My other load is Starline case, 15.0gr of HS-6, and a Fed 155, runs around 1220fps, both were from 5 1/2” Blackhawks. It’s much faster in my Contender.
The pentas are explosive on game. I don’t really recommend using it for deer. I’d use the shallow HP or the cup point or even the solid. But the Penta absolutely WRECKS small game vermin.
I recently used it/hunted it in Wyoming in rock chucks and picket pins.
The bullet shoots and tracks well passed 300yds, it’s quite stable!
It’s an awesome bullet, you can’t go wrong with it!
It’s my favorite and “go to” mid-weight for the 45 colt. I’ve been shootin it for about 5yrs now. I have shown and turned a few people to this bullet and they have been impressed also!

I have that bullet mold & it's my "go to" in my .45 Colt. I've loaded both the solids & the HP's. But my load data isn't in front of me. I'm thinking I'm using 4227 powder,, but the amounts escape me. It's an excellent performer.

Personal rant inbound…………So is a 454-640 a 454cu.in. with 640hp??? Cuz that sounds like an awesome motor!!! WTH is a 454-640??? Caliber, Grain, and style would allow more info for the OP from those of us not familiar with Cast bullet mold terms. Rant off

Rant off Trapr The 640 designation refers to a particular bullet profile that is offered by MP Molds. Miha offers this bullet design in several different calibers and is know to be very accurate in each. For the 45 caliber, a large hollow point weighs around 250 grains. The 44 caliber bullets you got from me are the 640 design. |

It's a design from our own bulletdesigner here on the forum. It's a @ 270gr bullet depending on configuration of the pins you use (solid, lg hp, sm hp, cup). A very popular design on this forum. |

It has been a dandy bullet for me in the 45acp and 1911 guns, seat just past the crimp grove and crimp on the ogive as any other acp bullet. Cast fairly soft and powder coated they will do some damage, I doubt the penetrate all that deep but then that wasn't the expectation either. Seem to shoot very accurately in my Les Baer and I have pushed them a bit over 900fps although I have settle on a load at 815fps that I have been playing with a bit more lately...

Believe the big HP's popular here for the 475/480 is a 640mP design. I buy them from a couple of you, don't cast myself.

I’ve done so many that I invent as I go due to running out of options. Not everything I name stays that way as Miha alters the name sometimes. In this case, we have the basic as cast diameter, the the nose design style. You’l read many explanations of what it is, but keep in mind I don’t often explain it. So think of a 640 style nose being a style guiding the bullet into the rifling straight and concentric at a rapid rate…. NOT INSTANTLY. It allows you to achieve increased accuracy provided you do your thing right. It has none of the common terms used by any other maker you find or name because those things are not there. This is my construct entirely. |

I'm a big fan of the 640 nose profile as well.
Shoots well in everything I've tried, and as mentioned previously is the best I've found in some guns.
I have the 359-640, 411-640, 432-640, 454-640, and 477-640.
