6.5CM. I had this one built for my son. It’s an absolute laser. When he was 10-11, he shot it for the first time. 1 shot was an inch high on the turkey, the next 7 were hits at 450 yards. He killed his first deer with it two years ago his first trip out and is ready to take it again he told me last week. 140 Berger hybrids over H4350 is your friend. I want one!

The 6.5 Creedmoor is excellent in everything so chambered.
Many feel the necessity to attack it and you can be certain they never worked the cartridge.
Guess this is to be expected due to it's overnight popularity. In my 60 years, I've never seen any round gain such widespread acceptance. Certainly not in the abbreviated time span.
But, it's success cannot be denied.
I've been a 6.5mm Fan since I bought my first Swedish Mauser in the Early 80s.
I've got several 6.5x55s, 3 6.5 Grendels and a 6.5x54 MS. But, I added a very rare Ruger #1 UltraLite in 6.5 Creedmoor a few years back.
It's a well designed, efficient and accurate cartridge. There's those who'll admit it and those that are wrong.
Everybody likes and dislikes most cartridges. But, this one earned it's success...

I don’t dislike it, just don’t see a need for it in my case.

The 6.5 Creedmoor may be the perfect round for non reloaders since ammo is everywhere. I got one in a T/C Compass when they came out because I wanted to try it without spending a whole lot. It worked very well but it isn’t a magic cartridge. It didn’t do anything that my .260 couldn’t do or 6.5x55 or several others. I have recommended it to a lot of people that just want to buy ammo and shoot. Nothing wrong with it at all

Would the 6 mm creedmoor be more apples to apples?

6CM is very similar to a 243 but I find it to be much easier to find a one hole load for. My 6CM shot 105 Berger VLD Hunting under .100 at 100. Amazing shooting rounds. The cases are designed right and they want to shoot. Like someone mentioned the 6.5 has a ton of factory ammo and most is match grade type ammo. Great accuracy. Ammo is everywhere. Easy to load for. They aren’t picky. People love to give them grief but if it works, it works. We have shot one of my 6.5s out past a mile. They are very consistent. I run a modest load in mine and love it. My son has won several small bore ELR matches with first round impacts out to 1650 until we got rained out on the last one.

Yeah, zeus. But I wouldn't exactly call you or your son average shots.

The better to make the point, then. Edit in.. I'm an inexperienced scoped long gun shooter, I'd likely not be able to tell much difference between, but ya know I'd have an opinion. I've a new Savage 110 based 6.5Cm, know I'll never tap all of the 6.5CM's potential. Truly a 7-08 would have covered my hunting needs easily. Where the 6.5CM starts to show its advantages is well beyond where I'll shoot living targets. But I know my younger friends are gonna suck me into longer range shooting games and it will improve my shooting overall, hence the 6.5Cm here now. My camp is mostly woods and small timber cuttings, our range there only goes to 200yds.. Friends cabin all hillsides and when leaves are down, Looong shots can be had. So he has targets and steel to 300yds and soon will push it out to 650 yds. I can't imagine shooting past 200, but I know I'll try ! At that soon to be, 650yds steel, am thinking the 6.5CM will show it's mettle better !

When I used a rifle for hunting,, LONG ago,, I found a .243 and fell in love with it. Ammo was easily available. But I also reloaded, so no issues. It's based upon the .308 case, and as such,, a proven performer. I killed a lot of deer with 1 shot with mine. I used 100 grn Hornady Spire Pt bullets. Deadly accurate & quite capable. I gifted my deer killer to my son, as that was the plan when I bought my second .243. My first one was a match target gun. Since I haven't used a rifle in so long,, I haven't chased the newer stuff,, such as the 6.5 Creedmore. But looking at the question, and the use of a 15" bbl,, I wonder about how efficient it may or may not be. I use a 7x30 Waters in a 14" bbl, and it amazed me long ago. I suspect either caliber (.243 or 6.5) will likely do the same.
My suggestion is to see if it's possible to TRY one of each prior to a decision.
As noted,, the .243 is "old" and often ammo or brass isn't as readily available anymore. (That's hard to believe, but true.) Especially the selection when you do find it. The 6.5 is the new kid on the block, and lots of ammo selections are out there. That may be a serious consideration.
I guess my thoughts are that either one should do quite well for you.

Yeah, zeus. But I wouldn't exactly call you or your son average shots. I see your point 😉 but was mainly just saying they are not picky. I’ve never had to “work” at putting a load together for them. Any load was actually really good, but a tweak and it was exceptional. For instance, I use the exact same load for the 6.5 in like 5 guns. Everyone, excellent. I was testing a rifle I built last December. Shoved the usual in it and it put the first 6 rounds in 1/4” at 100. I gaurantee you we can tweak it one way or the other or maybe change OAL slightly and it will be a .1 load or better. But I wouldn’t change anything until it has another 75 rounds or so down the tube. It should start settling in velocity wise around there and then you’ll know what to do. If I don’t get out and shoot more this year I may forget which end of a scope to look through 😳

foxtrapper and Tyrone.... probably easier to piss up a rope than have folks correctly spell C-R-E-E-D-M-O-O-R. Drove through a town in Texas, name of Creedmoor. Any of our Lone Star boys & girls know the town? Perhaps you also know the name of a good, nearby German-Mexican barbecue joint. David Bradshaw

I was wondering how long not would be before the spelling of the name was mentioned.🤣 My days if correcting papers and student assignments is long passed so I skip over stuff like that or the term “Old model Vaquero” anymore.
