I finally wrapped up the finish on the hybrid Roy/Robb grips so the model 58 41 Special is finally done. We started with a model 58 without a barrel or cylinder then we bought a model 28 cylinder and found a rarer than hens teeth model 520 4" barrel which Al Siegrist rebored to 41. The model is like the model 58 in that is an older N frame fixed sighted gun except it was in 357 and had a tapered mountain gun style barrel. I also had bought a set of N frame round butt combats that Roy Fishpaw had made and bedded to a customers gun.
My thought was to have Alan Harton take all the parts and make a round butt, tapered 4" barrel 41 Special, install the Bowen fixed combat sights and fit the Fishpaw grips to it. Alan finished all the mechanical work then called me and told me he could not fit the grips to the gun because there was not enough material at the toe of the grips to make it work. I told him not to worry about it and just send the grips back with the gun. Once I had the grips and gun in hand I could see why he was hesitant to try and make the grips work. Earlier I shared how I figured that since Roy had bedded those grips to a particular gun I figured I would do the unthinkable and cut the grips up and add material. Thus the Roy/Robb hybrid moniker. I finally was able to spend a little time doing some epoxy work with the grips then sand them down and wet sand several coats of Timberluxe onto the grips. Are they perfect? HECK NO but just look at the flawed owner and you can see how they are actually just right for the little short fat guy with all h is warts!
My only double action gun and last one I will have tweaked I am thinking.
