Preferred Field Holster

I am looking at expands my sixgun leather repertoire. I always CCW a semi-auto, but when hiking, hunting, working at the gun club, etc. I like to carry a revolver mainly just to have an excuse. I am not worried about concealment at all as I always carry on a 2.25" over belt for style, comfort, and ease of removal. What are some of the preferences around here? I have a carved Simply Rugged 120 that is fantastic and I use for my 6.5" N Frames. I am looking for something for my 4" Ns. I have been eying a Milt Sparks 200AW, but they are very expensive and the Barranti Hank Sloan looks extremely similar for a lot less money. I also have been looking at the Barranti Gaylord w/ flyaway thong for something different and since it only fits 4" Ns. Any experience with these models or is something different to be recommended?

I prefer the style called an Avenger style, the Milt Sparks catalog would list it as the BN55, Bianchi called it an Askins Avenger, I have two Thad Rybka Avenger style belt holsters and they are my most comfortable belt holsters for big revolvers. I carry a 4” Vaquero 500L in one and my Ruger 5.5” Blackhawks in them. They are similar to a pancake type but only utilize the extended belt loop in the rear of the holster.

I’ve got a Simply Rugged 240 for my 4 5/8” SBH that’s great for pants belt wear. For an actual gunbelt I have a couple Shootist holsters and the one Simply Rugged made for my 4” GP100 is a dandy. I may eventually get a twin for my 4” 629 but really there’s not much a 4” .357 Magnum can’t do here in Appalachia.

For the use you are describing, and not breaking the bank, I am a big fan of Galco’s Wheelgunner 2.0, basically a Bill Grover design, but Galco makes it for the 4” N frame. Easy to remove and rides high and tight, very easy to sit and drive with, if it is uncomfortable, unsnap and put the holster somewhere in easy reach. Steve

EPS 1930 Austin is one that I have used extensively for that application. It's very comfortable for me, and it looks good, too.

TO THE OP'er: IS AN "over belt" A GUN BELT SEPARATE FROM A PANT BELT? IF IT IS A SEPARATE GUN BELT THEN SOME OF THE RECOMMENDATIONS ALREADY GIVEN ARE FOR PANTS BELTS. FOR GUN BELTS (NON-BUSCADERO RIGS AND HOLSTERS) THE CHOICES ARE MANY AND A LOT OF THE CHOICES ARE MORE WITH STYLE THAN FUNCTIONALITY. WHEN CHOOSING A HOLSTER MAKE SURE IT WILL ACCOMODATE YOUR GUN BELT's WIDTH.

FOR A SEPARATE GUN BELT, I REALLY LIKE AN EL PASO SADDLERY "1930 AUSTIN", PLAIN, CHECKERED OR FLORAL CARVED, THEY MAKE A GREAT, GOOD LOOKING, HOLSTER FOR 4" N FRAMES. THERE ARE OTHER GREAT MAKERS AROUND BUT FOR 4" N FRAMES ON A SEPARATE GUN BELT THE ONE I HAVE PERSONAL EXPERIENCE WITH IS THE 1930 AUSTIN.

I WAS CHECKING DOC's WEBSITE, A LOT, BUT NOT ALL, OF HIS HOLSTERS TOP OUT AT 1.75" AND UNDER WIDE BELTS, SO ALWAYS CHECK! A GREAT THING ABOUT THE EPS "1930 AUSTIN" IS THAT IT HAS A GENEROUS SIZED BELT LOOP.

Lawrence 120 style from Barranti or Randy Miller (Big Bore on this site). I especially like Barranti carving.

Yes I do a second belt that's 2.25" Wide. I did notice that most of Barranti's holsters don't go up to 2.25" on the catalog, but once I had narrowed down some models I was going to reach out and ask. My Simply Rugged 120 actually isn't cataloged with a 2.25" slot, but Rob was happy to accommodate. I really like my 120 style, but wanted to try something different for the next just for variety. One thing I found with my 120 that is nice is that although it is cut for a 6.5" 29 with the heavy barrel, my other 6.5" guns (27-2 and 24-5 Heritage) fit really well and the safety strap keeps them snug. I certainly don't mind buying leather, but multipurpose helps the ammo budget.

I have a Simply Rugged for my BFR they do nice work.

The only revolver I carry nowadays is my 3 3/4" Super Blackhawk while fishing and then cross draw (CD) in a holster I had made for me (seller 7Thawk) on Ebay. I fish left handed and a CD holster gives me quick access and I do not have to drop the rod to get the gun.

The N frame is in a Tucker holster

Pancake style are nice, as in Simply Rugged Sourdough. They keep the gun secure and tucked out of the way. Put it on and forget about it till you need it. Tom Threepersons are also good. But my all time favorite for hunting or kicking around is a tanker style chest holster, as long as it won't be in your way.
