Singleaction, I just saw your post after I posted mine. With that long-nosed bullet loaded to 1.61" you get: 20.0 gr. H110 giving 35.0 kpsi at 1300 fps. 107% load density at that max 20 gr. load. 18.7 gr. gives 100% load density @ 1215 fps and 29 kpsi. The starting load you mention would really be all I need. Thanks you. Ross Seyfried mentioned, in his article on the Ruger Bisley flattop 44 specials, that 30k psi in the new model midframe rugers in 44 special is reasonable.

May or may not be applicable here, but 10-12 years ago I developed some Vihtavuori N110 loads using 260gr Kieth bullets in special brass that chronograph 1245fps through my 5.5" single action Colt and 1285fps through my 5.5" FA97. The charge was 17.5gr VvN110, with winchester large pistol primers, and has in-fact been pressure tested since to just 23,400psi ... it's a very high performance, and very-very accurate load in every suitable Special I've shot it through. Inlcuding rifles.
I know that it isn't specifically the mag-pressured load you're asking for, but certainly is in the highest performance special-level category attainable. It surpasses Elmers old 2400 load in the special, and does so at a notably lower pressure too. It also exceeds the grand majority of 44mag factory loaded ammo as well, outside the heavyweight, boutique offerings out there.
I did load & play with some 272gr WFN bullets over my same 17.5gr charge of n110 after the Keiths (in special-brass). The 272wfn I used chronographed close to 1200fps, and did shoot accurate, but I do not know what they pressured to. I fired them in my Colt, sparingly, my FA97 & also a Vaquero. Recoil & point of impact changed so much from my reliable old 260/17.5 load that I dropped the 272gr bullet and quit it altogether. In each of those guns. And never bothered to push for heavier bullets afterwards either ... much above 260grains, things get pretty bronc'y and you have to decide if it's actually worth going there. Just like the other guy posted to begin with, a 250/260gr Keith will break shoulders and exit Bull Elk even on poor angles, a bear won't be any different regardless what breed.. they aren't made of steel

Thanks for sharing!

I sold my only 44 magnum revolver last year. I almost exclusively ran 44 Special loads in the 2-3/4" Model 69 anyway.
I figure if I need more power than the 44 Spl 250-260 grain bullet @ 900-1200 fps, then I'll step up in caliber to 480 Ruger with the MiHec 395 gr hollowpoint @ 1,000 - 1150 fps. My 45 Colt loads in the Harton customized Montado are held to 23k PSI, too.

I used to load everything flat out max. But over time I have came to really appreciate what a well designed bullet can do in the 1000fps range.

My standard is a 250 Keith or Keith/Thompson over 8.2g of Powere Pistol. Love it. I’m about to receive a 4.75” FA 97, and I want a good bear woods load. I can’t say I need it, but I’m using that as my excuse, anyway.

I’m working on a Ruger Flattop in 44 Special Magnum load myself but in the other direction. I installed A 7 1/2 Colt NF barrel and I’m betting I can easily exceed 1400 fps with the Miha 185 grain GCHP and wreak havoc on pests here in S Texas! This with a sixgun some lighter than a SBH.

I have the same ruger and barrel combo…I just haven’t had them put together yet!
