Back when I was an unsponsored 3 gunner, my rifle was a Springfield Armory gun that looked just like that. I still use it for teaching NPS guys that do game culling on the parks, since M1a and M14’s are still in their armory. Had it out last year for a class and I’ll be taking it in a few weeks for another class, still shoots better than me. They are great guns, had a know it all competitor come and tell me one day at a match it was a shame that they were sooo slow to do a mag change. Which was why he “always” chose the superior AR10 platform for 308 use. I asked him if he’d be willing to “race” for pink slips, being quite sure of himself he accepted, and called around several other shooters to announce he would have an M1a for sale here in a bit. The first reload he claimed a bobble on the insert, and crawfished saying best two out of three, on the second reload he nailed a pretty good one but still got beat. I told him if he could win the next one I’d let him keep his rifle. He didn’t want to do a third, and I let him walk away with his tail between his legs……….i do enjoy calling out some people!!!

Good show. As an aside try stripper clips out, very fast. I’ve used the normal 5 rounders for a long time and have 10 round stripper clips for the Indian 308 Enfields, but haven’t tried them in the M1A for fit and function.

Trapr.... While I commend your generosity, you should have taken that punk’s rifle. Been in a couple of shootoffs where the other competitor wanted another chance, and, like you, gave him another chance. It’s good this kind of crawfishin’ is witnessed by other competitors.
Even if I loved the AR-10, which I don’t, I’d never badmouth an M1 Garand, the M14, or a proper M1A. To do so betrays serious ignorance.
As for the stock, serious Rube Goldberg handles have been clamped on the M14 and M1A’s, including some the Army bought which look like landing gear. The Germans forgot how humans are built when they proportioned the butt on the G3/HK 91. The Army’s----since condemned----Rube Goldberg contraption for the M14 is worse. The M14/M1A sings with a strong, slim stock.
Against that, believe it was Brown Precision laid up a slim, very strong fiberglass stock for the M14, which turns that rifle into a wand. I consider the M1 Garand a wand from prone to offhand, which is where the buck stops. David Bradshaw

The USGI fiberglass stocks tend to be a reasonably tight fit on an M1A. Where the are lacking is the rigidity of the forearm. That's mostly a concern if you're slinging up to shoot in High Power. A good, tight leather sling will flex the forearm, and can cause accuracy issues when it messes with the stock ferrule/front band interface.
