My 3 pistol powders have always been Bullseye for 9mm and 45acp; W231/HP38 for .38, and Unique for .44 spl/45LC. Boring I know, but they always worked. However, all of these were sold out at my LGS, except for a can of Bullseye. But they did have a huge stock of Accurate powders, which I have never used. Creature of habit, I guess. I did find some cheap SW Clean Shot once, but its almost gone. I was happy with my my few loads.
My internet research indicates that Accurate #2 and #5 cover much of the same ground. Shooting mostly cast bullets. Would use #2 for 9, 45acp and #5 for 44 spl and 45 LC. I guess either for .38. I dont load magnums. Just reload for my basic needs.
I am not panicking yet, but thinking about buying a couple 4 lb containers in case my state legislators decide that grumpy old men who reload are a risk to others.
So the question is - would these 2 powders - #2 and #5 - replace my Unique, Bullseye, and W231 for basic pistol calibers if I stocked up? If I just bought one, would #5 work across the board? I hate changing my “go to” powders, but they are not there. Its hard to break old habits.

I personally like #5 for the 38sp and 45acp. You couldn't give me a 9mm. #7 is a great heavier load powder, too. #9 is my most used powder

My experience with AA5 has been in a word…okay. Reloading data is all over the place with it in 45 colt so you’ll definitely have to work up your own loads with a Chrono.

I’m good with OK under the circumstances. That is how I feel about Unique. #5 is probably the best option of available powders. I want to stash enough away to not worry.

#5 is going to meter a lot better than Unique and anything meters better than Bullseye.

I've used both AA #2 and #5. I went back to W231 for 9mm, 38 Spl, 44 Spl, 45 Colt and 45 auto. For higher end loads I had a 5# keg of Hercules Blue Dot. Have decided to stay away from Alliant Blue Dot and went with 2400 and AA#9, I even picked up a couple pounds of Enforcer to try. I have W296 for magnum loads but never liked how the ball powder bead-blasted brass cases and stained them so badly. I just don't load upper end magnum loads now anyway except in 327 Federal and 357 magnum. If anyone wants a keg of W296 you can drive to the Ruskin, Florida area and buy it from me, lol... I have a keg of Universal, too. I probably have enough 231 to last me the rest of my life. I have VV3n37, and Ramshot Silhouette for upper end 9mm hp loads and 9x23 Winchester. I also have some Longshot to try. If I was looking for a Unique-type powder replacement I would also search for Power Pistol. For a 231 replacement I'd try Ramshot Zip. www.powdervalley.com/product/alliant-power-pistol-smokeless-gun-powder/www.powdervalley.com/product/ramshot-zip/www.powdervalley.com/product/winchester-231/

I need Universal, but that's way to far to drive for it! It's my favorite 38/357 powder. Great in 45C too
