Ok guys first time posting been reading a long time and admiring some of the nicest customs the inter has to offer! Y’all have really infected me and I have been on a single action kick lately mostly rugers, bought a new standard, and snapped a new single colt SAA yesterday……. Anyway I have gotten my hands on a flat top 44 bisley 4 5/8 stainless and love it have been loading and shooting the “skeeter load” however instead of unique I’m burning universal 7.5gr. Either way I know about the typical 7.5gr unique, however I’m reading skeeters book good friends, good guns, good whiskey and I have found some what of a contradiction. Page 273, his article The .44 Special: A Reappraisal states the following “ For an intermediate cartridge of around 1000 fps, 8.5 grains of Unique serves well and out preforms most factory pistol cartridges of any caliber.”
So what gives here fellas? Is it misprinted in the book? Or was it later changed to 7.5gr? Or were there pressure problems at 8.5? I have read the article several times and his is obviously talking about 44spl not 44mag loaded to 44spl levels. He goes on to talk about using this load in his custom single action as well. The reason I ask is I’m so used to seeing 7.5gr unique that when I saw 8.5 it gave me pause. What do y’all think?

Skeeter's load actually came from Elmer Keith, though it's only mentioned in passing in Sixguns. IIRC some of the older manuals (Lyman 43 or 45?) listed 8.5 Unique as max.
Universal is a good option if you have it, 8 grains with a 429421 runs 1040 fps from my 4 5/8" Flattop with low spreads and good accuracy.
