I found today a very early 7.5" New Model 45 Colt Blackhawk with its 45acp cylinder. Condition is easily 98%. My question is, when did Ruger stop recessing the cylinders? Both of the cylinders are recessed on this Blackhawk. Serial number is 46-085**

Some early NM guns had recessed cylinders as they made the transition so I’m not surprised your early NM has recessed cylinders.

Thanks. I haven't bought it yet, but I'll try negotiating a decent price on it tomorrow. In my experience, the very early Blackhawks had better fit and finish before the ugly lawyer script Blackhawks were produced. As a dedicated old model collector and shooter, the only things that interest me in this one are the recessed cylinders and very fine condition. Unfortunately, there is no box or paperwork. I measured the cylinder throats on both cylinders at .455" with a set of dial calipers that the shop let me use. I will try to buy it.

I had a mid-70's one (non-recessed) that had throats measuring .455"

Not much to understand. The cylinder comes all the way back to the rear cylinder window.
Rimmed or rimless, the term is applicable. Very desirable gun...

If the ACP cylinder is indeed recessed for a rim, I wonder if it could have been cut for 45AR?

Even if the cylinder were slam up tight against the standing breech, tne .45 Auto would not require counterboring. Only if milled for the .45 AR ............ Bob Wright

Bob Wright I don't suppose any modern brass requires counterboring. But, I still prefer it when available. Freedom Arms, BFRs and a few others come this way. I did have my Ruger 45 ACP Cylinder cut for 45 Auto Rim...

To answer the OP about when the recessed cylinders were used.
The Old style of OM cylinders with the recessed chambers,, (firing pin groove type,) in the convertibles have been found between 46-05874 to 46-11384.

I have 46-1539 with a counter sunk cylinder but it’s not a convertible.
My 7 1/2” Pre Warning convertible doesn’t have the counter sunk cylinder but it’s later. 46-31010. Terrific revolver! I bet yours will be too.
