I got a great deal on a new 480 super redhawk and since a lot of you have them on here im hoping someone will answer a couple stupid questions. ImMa start by just letting ya know how i plan to use it, i live in wv and sadly my days hunting big deer in the cornfields are over and now my only hunting is very small "farms" that 50yds is a long shot and a deer over a 100 pounds seems rare. Bullet wise i looked in a couple.places i know and the 475 bullets they had was a 6 week wait so does anyone know i place to buy bullets that are in stock? I plan on shooting a cast bullet like i do in my 45 colt, in it ive shot the 270saa bullet between 900 and a 1000fps using unique and want to do the same with the 480. So basically what weight bullet to use, any idea where to get some? And i think i seen something about unique and the 480 on here awhile back so any problem there? Thanks for any advice id appreciate it

Buy some 385 HP from Dick(sixshot). Run them over HS6 at about 1100 fps and it will roll anything you point it at.

That bullet is a top choice and from what I have seen, Dick is a top notch caster.

The 340 grain RNFP "Thumper" from Missouri Bullets is a very good bullet and they are relatively cheap. It will easily drop any deer you ever encounter.

These will work great. 385 grain gas check.

+1 on the Sixshot or Randominator proved bullets, I’ve had great success with bullets from both of them. Also the recommendation of HS6 for a midrange velocity load is a good one. The Barnes XPB bullets seem to work better with more velocity than what you mention, so while they are very accurate my experience has been that they need lots of velocity to perform optimally. A good cast HP at 900-1100FPS should suit you very well.

A recovered Dick Thompson and Glen Swaggert hard lead HP. Loaded in 480 brass with a charge of 12.0 or 13.0 grains of HS-6.... Damage from the bullet on small boar...

I really like the Arsenal 476-415 swc as a heavy 475 bullet. It's a serious Keith-type penetration bullet with good meplat.

I'll second and third those bullets from Dick and Randominator. I load mine to about 1050-1100 fps

Regarding Unique, there's some data out there of 10 gr. behind 325 grain bullets.

Is a 400+ grain bullet really needed for under 100-pound deer? Seems to me like a much lighter bullet would more than suffice, as long as the accuracy is there.

I tend to shoot the same bullet and load for most of the hunting I do now. From groundhogs to bear. Hitting groundhog at normal hunting range equals hitting bigger game with the same load and range

The lighter bullets in the 475 act more like a Casull in the recoil dept if you run them hard. Pretty obnoxious honestly. The 385 is very easy on you and the gun and hammers deer hogs etc. I’ve taken everything up to bison with it when we had them done in the beginning. Dead is dead, does it really matter if it’s 325 or 385 as long as it doesn’t beat you up and shoots really well? I’m like big bore, I have one load I pretty much use anymore and don’t change it regardless of what I’m doing. My recovered slug is the same as James. This one was 100% on weight basically and expanded to .96”
