Last night I replaced the stock hammer for a wide spur (WS) hammer in my BFR .44 and I absolutely could NOT get all of the grip frame (GF) screws in. After removing the GF all screws would go into all of the screw holes holes so the threads on the holes and screws are OK but after 3+ hours of unsuccessful diddling, wiggling, and and pushing on the GF I've resolved to send it back to Magnum Research (MR) to re-attach the GF.
Last year I scored a BFR .454 with the WS hammer and it spoiled me enough so that I thought it was worth the ~$75 go get a WS hammer into the .44. Now I'm not so sure it was! :-)
Anyway I figured while it was at MR I'd have some custom work done to it but I'm not into eye candy and it's really perfect as it is or will be when I get it back.
Anyone else had a devil of a time reattaching a GF enough to need to send it home?

Just last week I was creating new ugly words while attempting to put the grip frame on my Single Ten... Put it down until the next morning and it went together easy...

I did the same on my first Ruger Standard pistol, only I had to put it down three times. When I finally got it back together, I didn’t even know how I did it.

I've had many of my Ruger's open and a few were a bit of a challenge but not like this one.

The first time I took the grip frame off of my BFR it took a while to get it all lined back up. I think the holes or counterbores are a little undersized and perhaps the heads of the screws are a little over sized. This doesn't allow any "play" when lining it all up. They use those stainless cap screws with the knurled sides which take up some of the counterbore space. You might try sanding down the sides of the screws to give it a little more wiggle room.

It doesn't help with the frame, only thing springs, but it does make life easier. Usually I will get the frame in place and start all the screws to the point that the knurling is just started into the counter bore. then I pull up the rear two, but don't really tighten them. Tighten the rear two bottom screws, then put the last bit of torque on the rear two. The do the front bottom.

I ordered a set of screws and I'll take down the OD before sending it back, thanks.

Thanks, I got spare screws and kept the originals in case some ninny in the future tries to beat my son down on selling price because it's "not original" :-) Anyway, I had to take ~.003" off of the 5 screws (all of the knurling) to get it back on and it's not necessary for it to go home. I REALLY like the wide spur hammers on my two.
