I’ve been reading through the forum the past few weeks and have been particularly interested in the changes to the BFR in the last 5-6 years. I had a BFR in 475 Linebaugh in the early 2000’s but never warmed up to it due to the grip. The Super Blackhawk dragoon grip shape has never worked well for me. It’s too small to get my pinky on the grip and wrapping my pinky below it like on a Blackhawk or single six puts my hand too low on the super.
Based on everything I’ve read here I’ve had my eye out for a BFR in one of the 500’s. JRH, Linebaugh, and S&W were all in the table as were the new rubber grip and the bisley. Then Lipsey’s got a few of their exclusive 500 S&W’s with the 5.5” barrel and rubber grips in stock and I made a deal on one.
I am super impressed with the gun so far. Trigger has zero creep and has to be in the 2-3 lb range but I haven’t gauged it yet. Because the rubber grip extends below the grip frame I can get my pinky on it for a comfortable hold. Fit and finish of the gun are very nice and it shoots well too. My dad and I shot some Federal 325g and Hornady 500g factory loads and recoil was very manageable. My middle finger is in contact with the trigger guard but it wasn’t painful at all. I was interested in the bisley grip or JRH mod and thought I’d send this one off if I didn’t like the grip, but it’s working well so far.
Just wanted to say thank you to all the forum members who have shared their experiences in past threads that helped guide me to the decision on this gun!

The Ruger XR3 and RED gripframes have always been a problem for me with my pinky dangling off the bottom, but the Bisley and Dragoon are the only ones I have do not to date have a problem with. You must have big mitts :-)

Besides the Bisley grip, the only Ruger single action I’m comfortable with is a Single Six. I can tolerate the .22 or .22 mag, but get above that and I want more to hold onto. I have made do with over sized grips from Texas Grips but they are still not as comfortable as a Bisley grip. I still have a .41 mag with the oversize grips on it but I’ve been thinking about having Ronnie Wells install another grip frame. He just has too many choices and I don’t know which one I would prefer. I might have to drive to the Houston area and handle some of them.

Going to see Ronnie is one of the best decisions you will ever make.
