I just bought a 7.5" "well actually longer" BFR in 500-JRH, I wanted a 5.5" but could not find a plow handle in that size.
The plan is to have it cut to 5.5" or maybe a little longer, I have not decided.
It came with the rubber grip, and it does not fit my hand very well, not sure what direction I am going with that.
I guess the options are custom grip, Huntington grip mod, or Ronnie Wells grip frame.
This is my hand with a Ruger Bisley grip frame.
I loaded 10.5gr of 231 under a 440 Matts WFNGC and RFGC because that's what my RCBS little dandy would throw with a #16 rotor. They were not zero recoil as I have read. I would say more like a medium 44 mag, not top end but more than a Unique load by a good amount.
Nothing close to a 315gr 45 colt Ruger only load, the grip did me no favors as it was not comfortable at all, just did not feel right in my hand. My next time out will be same bullets over 27gr IMR4227 and see what the grip feels like with that.
What I have learned in this endeavor is that my normal reloading equipment is not adequate for the .50 Cal stuff. My Foster case trimmer will not fit the cut down 500 S&W cases so I bought a Lee trimmer that you can chuck up in a drill. I had a custom case length adapter made for the .501 dia 1.4" length case.
Next was a powder funnel, if any of my funnels would have fit in or over the case mouth I would have been good to go, but it seems that they all just kind of awkwardly sit on top with gaps. This all made loading the cases a pain, and slow as heck. I loaded everything single stage, but like to de-prime, size & prime, and bell the case mouth on a Dillon 550 press to save time So I also need to purchase another shell plate for the 550.
Most important is the grip I really do not like it, maybe I should have gotten a BFR Bisley but I just don't like the looks.
Now for the good, the fit and finish is good B/C gap will not take a .003" gauge, end shake I can't measure. It was accurate and I like the sights.
I set several 1 gallon water bottles at 35 yards I had anticipated that it would shoot high, so I took a 6 o'clock hold and the bottle launched into the air with a shower of water. all shooting was done freehand I could hit a 12" plate at 75 yards if I was doing my part.
I am looking forward to hunting with this revolver, I know I have a lot of range time and dry firing to do, I also need to factor in shop time for the barrel chop and grip mods wherever that takes me.
I would like to hear any advice on the grip, I like a Ruger Bisley, Ruger hunter, I also like a S&W 629 with full power 44 mag loads. I don't like a Ruger Blackhawk it feels like a kids toy in my hand, I also do not like a true #5 grip it is to small for big recoil for me. A XL glove is snug for me but not too tight
Sorry no pictures it was 110 deg and full sun, I packed up my trash and enjoyed the A/C on my ride home.
