Shot about 85 rounds of 44 mag through my Henery today. It has a 16.5-inch octagon barrel. It was fun. My load was a 240 grain XTP over H110. It shot well enough, but the barrel heated up pretty fast. Thinking a cast bullet might cause less friction and a faster burning powder like long shot or unique might let me fire longer strings without waiting for the barrel to cool as much!? Anybody think I am right or wrong? ...tj

tj3006.... as Bill Ruger, Jr., would quote a long past engineer, “One carefully designed experiment is worth 1,000 expert opinions.”
It’s summer. If you’re in a hot place, a cadenced pace of firing .44 Mag, or similar pressured rounds, will heat the barrel, and eventually most of the gun, to where you’ll need gloves to handle it. Shooting in the open in a fierce sun on a hot day heats a gun to where it barely cools at all during a break to set targets. The gun just seems to stay hot. To shoot under a covered firing line holds off the intense heat of shooting in direct sun.
When you experience such heat from H110 in a carbine, stay away from Hodgdon Lil Gun, also a double base powder; Lil Gun is a known heater in sixguns; under hot conditions, it must behave similarly in a rifle.
As to your other powders, their lighter charges should produce less heat. My loads are selected for a desired performance down range; all else revolves around that. Since you’re throwing so much lead, conduct your own experiment... you’ll have your answer. David Bradshaw

Having shot PDogs recently, our guns got hot in the direct sun and shooting. Placing them under shade and letting others shoot provided good cooling, plan in multiple guns or sufficient time between strings. If possible a fan blowing on it in the shade will help as will a cool wet towel, provided your barrel is stainless or you can dry it immediately once cooled. Smaller powder charges will allow more shots, typically. Multiple guns is the easiest for me, or allowing more time during hot months.
